Popular EVs in South Africa
  • Audi RS e-tron GT
  • Porsche Taycan
  • Jaguar i-Pace
  • BMW iX xDrive40
How many of each of the above were sold in order for it to be "popular"?
Edit: It seems that those were searched for a lot and might not represent actual sales.

Lol, toys for the rich with green bragging rights.

Didn't Volvo (Geely) also sell a number of EV's ?

None of those brands are big players in the EV market. In fact it is quite possible that some of those brands will not exist in ten years time.

The big players are Tesla, BYD, Ford, Hyundai. VW at a stretch.

The only one i ever see is the BMW IX, and maybe an Ipace every 6 months. The rest nothing.

Is the Hyundai IONIQ 5 or IONIQ 5 actually available in ZA?

IONIQ 5 is listed on ccarprice.com/za with a few references on other ZA sites.
Price in ZAR: R742,050
Price in USD: $43,650
Range: 470~480km

Seems like an excellent, affordable BEV with good range & features.

It's very sad, lots of electric cars just aren't available in South Africa, and the insane tax added to them price them out of the market for most.

Compared to here:

Which is often driven by lots of tax breaks so equivalent electric is cheaper than petrol.
This is my big gripe with articles like this.

The question should be, how many are being sold vs how many are allocated to SA. You cannot sell what you don't have in inventory.

I spoke to a guy at one of the big car company groups and according to him EV's are walking out the door much faster than their ICE priced equivalents. I even remember when my wife wanted to swap her XC90 for XC40 P8 how I had to almost threaten the dealership to keep the last one in the Cape for her.

What's wrong with this farkin country....? Do suits actually know how little money people have? And how ABSENT public transport is? And are motor hacks so spoiled by freebies that they also don't know how little money people have?
In about 7 years most of the world able to own cars will be electric. Then no more petrol and diesel (I think SA don't even have refineries anymore).
Then - no more cars under R2 million. No more taxi's. No more Ubers.
And we have no public transport...
I guess "don't worry, Cyril and Gwede will get donated EV's..."

Don't get your hopes up, IF it does come to ZA the Gov will tax the daylights out of it and R742k will be a pipe-dream...

That's....
I can buy a house for that?

The Autotrader's list of most listed EVs provides a better indication of what is being bought, and very few are affordable for Joe Public.
