About time. He has averaged 44 for the last 3 odd years. Take away his big double ton a year or so ago (which is his only score of substance in the last 2 years) and that drops to the thirties. He has long had this habit of making a big score when he about to be dropped.

I think a lot of damage has been done by keeping him on board for so long. His record is not great. Yes, the SA side is presently number 1 but we have the top 2 batsmen in the world and the top 2 bowlers. Any side would be number 1 with that.

A fools words.

Smith has given cricket South Africa a lot over the years and your lack of gratitude just shows that you truly dont understand what he has done for cricket in this country....

He will be remembered as the best Captain SA has ever had, he come in the most difficult of situations and raised to the occasion.

Smith's form has been in decline for a few years now and his sloppy work at slip shows that his heart is just not in it anymore. It is time for him to go.

Instead of attacking me. Please tell me what he has given to SA cricket. Give me some stats to back up your assertion. If you look at his record (captain and player) it's pretty average at best.

It's not always about the stats. I remember watching him come out to bat with a broken hand and wincing at every ball he had to hit. THAT was amazing for me. Something I'll always remember about him.

I have a better idea - just look up his stats on cricinfo and reconsider your stance. Granted his performance of late was not good, but even with only (sarcasm) an average of 44 over the last 3 odd years (your words), it is a good average.

Lol at some of you armchair critics, why don't you tell us your batting average? Biff's record speaks for itself, best captain we have ever had.

1) 27 centuries, none in a losing cause.
2) only player with 1000+ runs in successful 4th innings run chases.
3) Most wins by a captain.
4) Lead his country for 100 tests.
5) took over after a disappointing 2003 WC and at the age of 22 was expected to rebuild the team and indeed a nations confidence in its cricket team.
6) Most runs scored whilst captaining a team.
7) His critical role in our 438 chase
8) Achieved 2 series win in Australia. ( first time for SA)
9) first team to win a series in Australia since 91/92 ( can't remember exact date)
10) hasn't lost a test series in 5 years
11) hasn't lost a test series away from home since 2006.

None of this would have been achieved without Smith. Just think how many international captains Smith has seen come and go, then you will realise the toll it takes on players. Not everyone is cut out for captaincy, and 99% of people won't last 10 years in the job. This is especially true when you have the internal politics of CSA. Dealing with Quotas, transformation and an expectant public, isn't the easiest thing to do.

His role can't just be defined in numbers, the culture, the backroom, the winning mentality, the leader and the grooming of young players has come through from Smith and the structures that he was critical in setting up. He is integral in the way we have done things for a decade and he has given us many highlights.

In my mind, we would not be where we are without Smith and his influence over the past decade.

Smith was a good batsmen.
Very poor leader/captain.
Goodbye you arrogant fool.

That in essence summed up Smith, Hard, Brave, Courageous. The Australians actually gave him a round of applause. It was magnificent.

You should also add he come in to bat with a fractured hand to help save a test match against Australia, this was back when Mitchell Johnson was bowling at 150kph.

An average of just under 50 with 27 centuries as opener is "average"? By your standards AB and Amla must be only slightly above average....

Throw in his back to back double hundreds against England in '03 as well as leading SA to a series victory in England in 2012, displacing the then mighty English team as the world's number one side. Oh, and there's the small matter of hastening the retirement of three English captains after series losses to SA! Truly a legend of the game.
