Big plans to expand Gautrain beyond Pretoria and Johannesburg

South Africa’s only high-speed rail network is drawing up a multibillion rand plan to expand outside Johannesburg and Pretoria, joining a potential bonanza of infrastructure projects the government says are key to reviving the economy.

A proposal for the venture is awaiting sign-off by the National Treasury, William Dachs, chief executive officer of the Gautrain company, said in an interview.

Investment and loans would come from a mix of private investors and state institutions such as the Development Bank of Southern Africa, he said.

You just provided the proof that the project has started already! PRASA got some private contractors in to do the initial demolition and can now hand it over to the Gautrain company for the next phase.

Public transport doesn't need to be profitable to be a good idea.

I do however wish that money would have been spent to improve metrorail everywhere instead of building a system with a different track gauge in a small part of the country.

The problem is is that PRASA is a SOE, while this is privately run, if the money was put in there it would just be flushed down the drain. You didn't see them withdraw their security and large parts of the network stripped bare during lockdown? Because they are not an incompetent SOE,
