Ramaphosa warned about big VAT increase to fund grants

The Sunday Times reports that South African residents could soon face higher value-added tax (VAT) rates to sustain the R350 social relief of distress (SRD) grants.

This was shortly before a City Press report that the Department of Social Development had returned more than R15 billion worth of SRD grant money to National Treasury after it failed to spend the allocated budget.

I’m down for 20% VAT. UK style. That way when everyone’s had enough we can maybe get some infrastructure fixed a bit. All jokes aside these R350 grants go a long way for some of our fellow South Africans. I would rather pay more vat than have them suffer or need to turn to crime to live. Nobody asked to be born and they can’t help having grown up in certain circumstances

Wishful thinking. This is Africa my friend, it will just result in more handouts, more looting and more crime, and more cadres that will want to eat. These clowns will never have enough, billions of rands already gone with no one in orange suits. Grants invcentivies the poor to have more children, they bring it apon themselves. And we must pay for all of this with more VAT on top of all the tax we already pay, not to mention paying for all the services that goverment can’t provide. No!

SA is an extremist socialist country. Tax everything except maize meal more.

Vat is 15%
Need another 5% to fund the handouts.
Then 7% to find NHI
3% to fund the tax shortfall
1% to fund SABC when licenses are scrapped.
1% to fund e~Tolls.
5% to pay back the ANC's massive debt.

That's VAT at 37%...

People on grants must be allowed to vote

How about getting rid of 30000 useless eskom employees.
That would put about R20 Billion rand back so no need for VAT Hike.
Look at this vaakseun. That's drop in the ocean... you need to actually do something about this in real life other than band-aid it. Otherwise you're playing musical chairs like the DANC.

Say what? but they just continue to live. If they now feel that they never wanted to be born there are great options available.

I agree that people don’t choose to be born or the circumstances of their youth.

I disagree that having the majority of the population on grants is any kind of sustainable solution. What people need is jobs, not artificial government jobs, real jobs created through a growing economy.

The ruling party’s top 10 priorities should all be focused on growing the economy aggressively to get us out of the various mounting crises.
