Biggest broadband bandwidth users in South Africa

Makes my humble 20 Gb look quite pathetic

Physically impossible on a link with an air interface speed of 1Mb/s. Might have been on one of there microwave products.

Very much possible. I did more than that a few years ago when they had a competition going on who can download the most in one month. I ended up winning their 2mbps modem for my efforts. This for combined usage.

So what Afrihost accounts do these people have and is there no throttling/shaping for using that much?

Refer http://global.kyocera.com/prdct/telecom/office/iburst/2mutd.html

Data rate: Downlink - Up to 2122 kbps, Uplink - Up to 692 kbps with a total of 2814 kbs

898.5 GB potential on a link with 100% uptime.

Microwave downloader was about 2.2TB (but the link was only being used at 33% of it's potential)

1) You can see what accounts they have here: http://www.afrihost.com/site/page/uncapped_adsl_leader_board - though the Business Uncapped accounts are not shaped at all (not even at night anymore).
2) We only shape the accounts if there is network congestion, and that depends on which region you're in because network congestion is region dependent.

Yup, with a 2Mb/s modem, it can be done.

I'm still confused as to why the term "bandwidth hog" is used. Is is being implied that fully utilising your paid for, uncapped connection is somehow frowned upon?

Just asking. What would you call the gravity challenged person at the all you can eat buffet?
Fat. What would confuse me if the fat person sits and only consumes his/her own carry-in bottle of water at an all you can eat buffet.

You don't understand, 'uncapped' was supposed to be a marketing term, it shouldn't be taken literally! :D

If everybody used the full potential of their line 24/7 and expected awesome speeds, the prices for uncapped accounts would be much higher. There are contention ratios for a reason, not just in SA, all over the world.

Because bandwidth is limited. Your "hog" is in fact "hogging" a shared resource and not sharing. Also, fully utilising your line is fine so long as there is enough for everyone else to do what they need to do. I'd much rather the pirates be throttled during my work time because it costs me time and money if my line is slow because of the "hog".
