It sounds like a wacky idea out of science-fiction - but it’s funded in part by billionaire Microsoft founder Bill Gates and backed by top scientists at Harvard University.

The researchers believe that a fleet of specially-designed aircraft could spray sulfate particles into the lower stratosphere to cool down our planet and offset the effects of climate change.

given how his billion dollar venture in education went, I'm doubtful this is going to end well

Gates, Microsoft, Windows> Blocking the sun to fix climate change......we may be burning the rain forests, Apple trees and coal to reboot planet Earth.

Gates is an effing idiot.

Why not simply plant billions of indigenous trees at a fraction of the cost?
Everybody seems to have forgotten their primary school biology. Plants also give off CO2. In fact the net impact to CO2 of a forest is estimated to be negligible when you take into account the animal ecosystem it supports. Global tree coverage has been increasing steadily for many decades now anyway (since we don’t use as much wood for fuel any more).

Plants release less CO2 than they absorb though because they use CO2 for photosynthesis. So they are still carbon sinks but there needs to be enough of them to be effective in reducing climate change.

It only happens during the day. At night trees respirate and consume oxygen. The advantage is that trees cool their surrounding area.

Reminds me of the story about the ANC politician who was talking about landing a spacecraft on the sun and, when she was questioned about the craft burning up, she replied, “Don't be silly! We will land it at night.”

Our own indigenous Spekboom (Portulacaria Afra), also known as Pork Bush or Elephant's Food, is one of the only plants on Earth that produces oxygen by day and night, continually capturing carbon dioxide. It is a super efficient carbon trap. It is said to be more effective than the Amazon rainforest at sucking carbon dioxide out of the atmosphere. All our town and cities should be planing this in parks and on road verges. Poluting industries should be made to plant this shrub to offset carbon emissions instead of paying ridiculous carbon taxes.

Wow can a headline be more sensationalist if it tried...

Bill Gates is one of many funders of the Harvard Solar Geoengineering Research Project, and this endeavour is but one of the research projects within that much larger project.
