Bill Gates energy company invests in new thermal battery tech

What is the storage and recovery energy efficiency?

Thermophotovoltaic cells are traditionally less than 10% efficient in their use in spacecraft.

Not sure if the tech is meant to solve energy problems, or to consume government funding, so politicians can greenwash.

This looks like a total scam.

TPV cells are only getting close to 40% efficient at 2000C. Now factor in the Solar PV efficiency of around 20% and you have an 8% efficient system!! With wind, it would be around 35-40% x 40% = 16%!!

How the hell can they expect this to make sense? Lithium batteries are above 95% efficient.

There is no such thing as a free lunch: The main issue with this approach is heat loss which I doubt can easily be overcome without a major breakthrough in isolation materials.
