Hi Folks,

Been battling for a few days now and so I need to expert advise.

My config at home is:-
Telkom ADSL 4 MB service
Telkom Billion 400G ADSL modem / router
Linksys WRT54GL Wireless-G Router
Two computers ( Windows XP / MacBook Pro)

What I want to do?
Is connect my two laptops via their Ethernet ports, to the Linksys router. Linksys router connects via "Internet Port" to Port:1 of Billion ADSL modem, so both pc's can access the Internet.

I have gone through countless forums to find a configuration that works and thus far nothing. If I connect my Mac directly to the Billion it works. I cannot get the Linksys to see the Billion. I can ping the Linksys no problem, not the Billion.

Setting are:-
Billion WAN details (IP: 41.247.122.97; Sub: 255.255.255.255; GW: 0.0.0.0, DNS (196.43.50.190)
Billion LAN settings: 10.0.0.2, Sub: 255.255.255.0

Linksys settings:-
LAN: 10.0.0.1, Sub: 255.255.255.0;
Internet Settings (Static as ai can't get PPPoE to work: (10.0.0.110; Sub:255.255.255.9; GW(10.0.0.2)

Does anyone have a link with a tried and working setup, showing all the settings in detail to get this config to work. I also have a D-Link DES=1005D switch that I could not get to work either.

I'm fairly desperate right now.

Is the billion router dialing up? (have you put the login info for your adsl account into the billion?) if that's the case, then you need to get the linksys to bridge with the billion rather than use the WAN/Internet port, and then configure the linksys's IP settings so that the billion is the default gateway.

Personally though, I'd install dd-wrt on the WRT54GL, put the Billion in Bridged or half-bridged/pppoe-relay mode, and then get the WRT54GL to dial up and do all the work. In this scenario, I'd probably use the Internet/WAN port, but it would be "Assigned to LAN" in advanced options on the linksys

Thanks for the reply.

Well the Billion works when I connect my Mac laptop directly to one of the ethernet ports, so it is dialing up ok.

All the account info (username & passport) is in the billion, so the billion is not the problem, its getting the linksys to see and route traffic via the Billion where there is a problem. I need to look up about "Bridged" mode as I'm that that familiar with it. However I did try a setting in the Billion, i.e. changed it from PPPoE to bridged mode and that did not make a difference, but I assume when in bridged mode, you need to changed things like DNS, IP addresses on both routers and so not sure what these should be.

I install dd-wrt and try what you say and refer. Many thanks - Garth.

Hey fraction,

I recently upgraded the Linksys WRT54GL to dd-wrt V24. Do you know of any link / URL or discussion that describes in detail, what each setting on the Linksys and Billion 400G should be to get this to work.

The dd-wrt has many settings so any assistance would be useful. Alternatively I can list my settings. I set the Billion to "pure Bridge" mode, but I cannot ping the gateway IP address which is 10.0.0.2 from a laptop connected to the WRT54GL, so I'm guessing its the IP settings between the two.

Any advise

You should set the Billion and Linksys IP addresses to be on the same subnet. Typically, Linksys 192.168.1.1 and Billion 192.168.1.254

With Billion in bridge mode, and the Linksys WAN connected to the Billion LAN, set the Linksys to use a PPPoE connection and provide the ADSL account details in the Setup screen. With other settings as default that should be all you need to be up and running.

To be able to access the Billion GUI from a PC through the Linksys (which should only be necessary for checking the modem SNR noise margin etc) you can use the following cable connections:

Linksys WAN to Linksys LAN
Linsys LAN to Billion LAN
Linksys LAN to PC1 and PC2

Alternatively for greater network expansion, depending whether the Billion router in bridge mode can still act as a switch:

Linksys WAN to Billion LAN
Linksys LAN to Biliion LAN
Linksys LAN to PC1 and PC2 and PC3
Billion LAN to PC4 and PC5.
