Hi there.
I just would like to hear from other parents that birthed at Genesis with Discovery Medical aid KeyCare plus. Any advice and tips are welcome. We planing to start a family soon and want to make exactly sure this medical aid covers all the cost.

Another question we stay in Pretoria, can one still birth at Genesis? We specifically want a natural environment to birth at.

We also would like to know which gynae we should go to that is covered by the medical aid and works with Genesis.

Thankyou

from what I have seen via @AliCatS and her last year, Key care plus wont cut it at all, I am sorry.

normally I am 100% for key care plus and I believe it is the best plan, until a pregnancy and a young child comes into the picture. then everything changes.

if you cant afford the classic comprehensive for at least the first 3 years plus the pregnancy you are not financially stable enough. not to be mean, I am just sharing my observations.

A friend had a baby there, I'm not sure how it's called natural environment, it looks like it was once a house that's been converted and it's in the middle of Rosebank.

Wat? Why?

We are on Coastal Saver and have an almost 3yo now.

No problems at all.

I see no reason why you need to Classic Comprehensive plan.

Coastal saver is better than the Keycare plan by a ton, the keycare plan is actually limited to specific hospitals, doctors, dentists etc...

Muppets.

My daughter was born when we were on Keycare plus. Spent a week in ICU, at a lovely newly opened maternity wing at a Life hospital, and we didn't have to add a single cent in.
(was due to be a natural birth, ended up an emergency cesarean, but the bottom line is Disco pre approved the first option and covered everything for the actual option)

Good afternoon.

So lets start, who is your midwife going to be?
Secondly. Your midwife should be able to refer you to the gynea they work with. (This is essential. But it might not be part of the Keycare plus network)
Keycare plus is not enough. Not nearly enough. Keycare plus gets you into their single units. Which is the upstairs unit where you share with other moms. Your husband does not get to sleep with you there.

Now reconsider your options.

I was with a midwife at Genesis for months. Everything was set for natural birth. Time came to go to the gynea for my check up and my placenta was calcifying. He still gave me the go ahead. Right. I got a bad feeling and went to see a doctor. The doctor then said to me right, I am in labor. They have to stop it for a c section because of my calcified placenta. I could have lost my daughter. Add in that the midwife nor the gynea at a very well known Sandton hospital did not pick up my daughter was laying bridge. This is with all the fancy equipment Gensis has, they did not pick this up.

Don't put yourself in danger because you feel like getting an experience. Your childs life could be on the line.

And exactly how long ago is this?
Things change.

Yes, that part I can understand.

He specifically states you need Core Comprehensive though and I would like to know what his logic is.

think about it like this.
if you could not be on coastal saver, what plan would actually end up being cost effective? with all the other bills from a pregnancy, and the baby in the first few months.

remember Key care not only has a set list of Doctors and hospitals, but also a set list of medication they can pay for. anything off that list you pay for out of pocket.

in 6 years on key care I have been given the exact same antibiotic every time I have been sick.
Bronchtis, flu, nasal infection, lariggitis doesnt matter. all things considered, I can go to the doc 200 times in a year as long as I go to the network doc it wont be a probelm. there is no MSA, no savings.

unfortunately that one general antibiotic is not going to help a baby at all...

Key care is great, if you are close to a network doc, and network hospital, and you have no chronic medication, and all you need medical aid for is a few times a year where you get the flu.

Yup as long as you follow the rules of your plan (like going to the correct hospital etc) you won't have a problem.

I'm also starting to lean more and more to Medi-Clinic being the core problem with most people needing to fork out money and then blaming Discovery.

This never seems the case with Netcare and Life.

Your midwife visits btw is pay up front and claim back. This does not include your sonars. Which is also pay upfront and claim back from the medical aid.

None of which should be a problem if you stick to the set list of doctors/hospitals available to you.

The problem is people want to pay 1-star rates but go to 5-star hotels which obviously doesn't work.

The MSA you can technically supplement on your own and it would be no different than the other plans.

I am completely on the same page with you regarding proper financial planning when having a kid, which I think is ultimately your motivation for the statement.

Couldn't agree more.
