BIS deals not disappearing: BlackBerry

That is ok for now, the question is what about 2 years from now.

Thorsten even mentioned something along the line that they looking at selling the hardware section or maybe licensing out the software. For now I have a feeling they just tossed the bread out of the camp to see what is coming to feed and will decide after that what they wanna do in the future.

Then it leaves them not being able to introduce a cheap BB10 phone in SA because users would rather buy the old BB7s to get BIS.

I wish I never bought my blackberry! Who wants a phone that is completely useless without having to buy a BIS package.

You can bet your life they're trying their hardest to eradicate BB7 from the face of the earth. It's not making a profit for them, and is just an albatross around their neck going forward. Sure it's got a fan-base, but this is like Nokia's Symbian fan-base, it's got a year or two until nobody cares about it, and you have to basically sell the devices at cost or a loss.

Blackberry is just going to compete directly with Android and iOS. And in SA that end of the market is very small.

Not really, it's Android that has every tier of the smartphone market cornered from the cheapest to the most expensive. There's more than BIS that is driving users away from BB but I'm sure the Q10 will be a hot item on the market.

There is some speculation, however, that even if BB10 data bundles get a usage limit, secure services that use BlackBerry architecture such as BlackBerry Messenger will continue to work when the cap is depleted.

I highly doubt this, its all about profit and if they can make you buy data for BBM they will.

I predict (MHO) that the only benefit you will see is that it will be encrypted and secure.

Even then, this is highly overrated - the only breaches of security you hear about, when peoples phones get hacked, is social engineering - and it's usually on BB's - I've yet to hear about iOS/Android's https / imap-over-ssl getting hacked.

For a certain value of "encrypted" and "secure". I.e. a government they haven't given an explicit backdoor into BIS.

The question I usually ask myself is what backdoors they have installed they aren't telling anyone about. If I do IMAP over SSL or HTTPS at least I know BB doesn't actually have the encryption keys, and they cannot hand over the plaintext data. The government agency in question has to get it from the owner of the server instead.

I have had so many issues with BB and will not be getting another BB as I have lost way to much information when mine crashed both times!!!

The bigger question is really: How will local SPs price it - Vodafone example: £42 per month, Unltd minutes, Unltd texts, 2 GB mobile data, 2 GB Wifi, phone included

@Jan: This horse is dead. Please stop flogging it now!

Come on BB. You have one vote here. But if BIS isn't part of the package I will think twice. I just hate android that much.

I assumed that applications like Whatsapp would work without BIS so now I can't use my extra internet bundle at all.

You can. Just change the APN your phone connects with.

Bis deals will not disappear overnight... but BIS clients like me will...
