Black was crazy, says Cell C CEO

Cell C CEO Douglas Craigie Stevenson said for them to think they could compete against players like Netflix in a content play was crazy, which is why they pulled the plug on their Black streaming service.

The SABC will learn the hard way.
Sorta, at least Cell C and others have shareholders and a board to account to. So eventually the plug gets pulled. Losses gets cut and everyone learns and moves on.

In the case of SABC it will be bail out after bail out while pockets get lined and this will drag on for ages with task teams and commissions setup to investigate why its failing and continues to bleed money.

@ CellC well hellllloooo, you have Rands vs Dollars, they are focused and you split up well that was always going to be a fork -up...whilst I was with Cell C I didn't use their Black even when free abit like BB vs iPhone.
They got more and more complicated and too many packages .
All these different packages and deals waste money to implement and advertise... KISS
Simplify streamline both products and staff and focus on the quality of the product rather than smokescreen it to greatness via adverts

Cellc spent crazy amounts on content to the point where they needed to be more expensive than Netflix just to break even. SABC has content they just need the technology to stream it. Its two very different situations.

Ironically some of those can actually be profitable. Cell C just had no idea how to manage it and what to cut.

It's all about content. Even Netflix needs to charge more than Netflix to break even.

Content people will pay for... maybe. SABC has tons of old Afrikaans content, and if they can have some new quality Afrikaans content, they can get some Afrikaans subscribers that way. If the price is right, I'd subscribe. Would love me some Vetkoek Paleis and Orkney Snorknie and 4de Kabinet and others. Obviously they have a lot content in other languages, so they should leverage that. They can let people choose the language of the shows displayed in the menu.

You F'ed it up! At the time of the world cup, I signed up, fully intending to use it instead of supersport, except, not a single game was streamed, you were playing old recorded stuff from forever ago on a sport channel, what's.a joke, you burn me once, that will be it.

There is also plenty of documentaries/nature shows. In theory its all paid for as well so should be cheap content and they just need to cover streaming costs and add a reasonable margin. I guess we'll see how it turns out but it shouldnt be hard for them to put together some packages for specific target markets.
