I've had my bold 9000 for about a year and a half and now i'm getting 'sim card errors' ever so often. I have to either switch the phone off or take the sim out and put it back in again to get it to work. MTN tells me that the sim manufacturers Prism made some faulty sims and so i should go in for a sim swop. I'm not so sure if thats the case, i've had the phone for over a year...surely the issue isn't going to pop up all of a sudden. I've upgraded my firmware to the latest version on the MTN site as this was also one of their suggestions.... this hasn't helped either.....

i'm thinking that it could be a device issue.

Has anyone else seen a problem like this on any blackberry or know what could be the problem here?

I used to have that problem with my last Sony Ericsson. I'm not sure if it's a sim issue or a phone issue, do you switch sim cards quite often?

Nope I don't take out the sim often. Does anyone know if heat from the battery can damage the sim? The sim on the bold sits right under the battery exposed, no really covering.

Why don't you just sim swop and check its part of the fault finding process. Once you have exhausted all the options take the phone in for repairs. Sim swop is a painless cheap thing to do. R1 for a sim rica (I think) activate viola then you know what's what.

If you're on contract you have to do a sim swap at an MTN store and pay the full price for a new sim.

Yep, so i went to MTN and did a sim swap at MTN in canal walk. It cost me R110 but now everything is sorted, no sim card errors .So i asked the guy there if he's seen issues like this before on Blackberries and more specifically on the bold 9000. He says he's seen this issue a few times on BBs, and its mainly because the device is constantly sending and receiving data which causes the chip to get hot and eventually burn out. Really? Given.... i do use my BB a lot, but who doesn't? I don't think thats going to cause the chip to burn out in a year and a half. Can anyone tell me if there's any truth to this?

My phone does get quite hot sometimes on 3G so I try to keep it on EDGE most of the time where this doesn't happen. Who knows maybe it does? The sim is right next to the battery...
