BlackBerry smartphones return thanks to new agreement with OnwardMobility

I couldn't be happier with my Key2 LE. It's the only reason I tolerate Android, and in fact the only Android device I've enjoyed using in the last 5 years. Every other time I ran back to iPhones.

For the naysayers, I say try one. Usability is fantastic.

So I'm happy to know there will be more in future.

The main issue with Blackberry in recent years is that they decided not to stage them as Pixel-like devices. Instead, they customised the **** out of everything and fell behind on updating their version of Android.

What they should have done is go the Nokia route with barebones, stock versions of Android that get three years of support and security updates, with Blackberry's services and keyboard pre-loaded. Then give consumers the option of purchasing that software on other devices in order to claw back funds. Maybe even revitalise the Blackberry App Store in order to give consumers extra choice outside of Google's ecosystem.

I definitely would have appreciated being able to use the Blackberry keyboard on my phones. Their gesture control was better than Gboard at the time.

I hear you and it is my complaint with the Android ecosystem in general. That is the reason I generally went for Android One devices prior to this.

However at the risk of sounding biased, I believe it's a double-edged sword for some users. This Key2 LE is stuck on Android 8.1 (but it does receive security updates almost monthly even now) and so some thing that was very important to me (Call recording) works perfectly. On the Android One devices with latest OS, no.

Still, I agree with you in general since my example is an Android issue not a Blackberry issue.

In my mind the best of all worlds would have been a Key2 powered by iOS (and somehow squeezing in call recording).

The very well respected Mr Mobile is a huge die hard Key2 fan as well.

I am all in.

Now that that idiot Trump has effectively killed Android Huawei, I would definitely pick the upcoming Blackberry. Was thinking Samsung or Nokia but after these news no more.

So for those of us who have not bothered to keep up with this particular branch of phones and gadgets, does this new blackberry have a normal push-button keyboard?

I hope the do well this time around. What would be a great addition is if they made a feature phone (a blackberry curve successor anyone!?) that has a trackpad, a traditional qwerty keyboard and, most importantly, ran on KaiOS. Reason why I say KaiOS is because they are better suited for lower end hardware (which means cheaper for them to make and cheaper for us to buy) and devices with a traditional keypad like qwerty or T9. If it has a trackpad I think it would just make it easier to navigate the app.
