The only reason I can think of of why BBs are so popular here is because of the dataplan. But not even that is good enough reason to own one.

BBs will always be popular if the research includes the low cost BB 8520. If Apple introduces a low cost smartphone we would be reading something very different. Please compare apples with with apples, no pun intended!

No one wants blackberry because they want a blackberry they just want the free Data! Offer free data on any phone and suddenly it will become the dominant phone add to that the fact that they will give you a blackberry or 2 on just about any contract and of course it will look like the most popular! If Vodacom offered free data on the iPhone or an android phone at the same price as the blackberry contracts everyone would be using one of those. Blackberry is basically giving phones away and bribing you to take them with free data!

For those interested in how the survey was conducted, here's the skinny from Dashboard, the folks that conducted it:

  • 1203 cellphone owners interviewed, aged 16+, 803 urban, 400 rural.
  • Sample chosen to be nationally representative (geographically), excluding the Northern Cape which has 2% of the country's population.
  • Total (rural + urban) findings weighted according to SAARF All Media and Products Survey (AMPS).
  • Additional 200 booster interviews were conducted "to provide richer detail" but were excluded from main results as they could bias findings.
