Blame Zille if CT loses semi-final says ID

Cape Town mayor Helen Zille will be to blame if Cape Town loses the 2010 Soccer World Cup semi-final, Independent Democrats leader in the city council Simon Grindrod said on Thursday.

"I'm holding Helen Zille personally responsible if we lose the world cup (event), because her first act as mayor was to halt the planning process," he said.

His statement follows claims by the Western Cape provincial government - denied by Zille - that the city has blundered on a crucial procedural issue in paving the way for the construction of a R2,5-billion stadium at Green Point in the city.

Grindrod said Zille's first act on taking up the mayoral chain in March this year was to halt the stadium planning process over questions she already knew the answer to the questions.

"She was trying to appease her support base, and it's all backfired," he said.

The two month delay that ensued had probably cost the city the semi-final.

"The blame must go squarely on her shoulders for playing politics with this critical issue."

Political maneuvering by the anc to take the WC from CT.

"This seems to me to be a storm in a teacup, motivated by the ANC's political interests at provincial level," Zille said.

But Zille said this morning: "It is a storm in a teacup and mischief-making.

"I am tired of the creation of political suspicion. The city has been working closely with the province at all levels, and there is joint decision-making on 2010. Rezoning is a provincial competency.

"A couple of weeks ago Premier Rasool came to see me in my office. We produced a detailed, step-by-step work plan."

"I am... dismayed that the City of Cape Town has either misread the law or that they have allowed incompetence into the process, so much so that we now have this delay," Rasool said.

Grindrod is De Lilles mouth. She's created so much damage to herself that she's now trying to use a puppet to draw attention from her bungling. Of course it also leaves her the exit point of saying that Grindrod exceded his capacity, wasn't towing party line, etc, when she fires him; after which, in her eyes, she is still squeeky clean.

Actually, I imagine as a resident of CT it would be absolutely fab to have the masses elsewhere in the country for the WC. But that's just me. They can showcase the royal Ba***eng as an asset to the country and take people on Soweto tours - let them see the whole country... everyone knows CT.
