Blogging and making money

Has anyone here started blogging with the dual interest of writing and making money? Or even, with the sole purpose of making money?

How is that working out for you? Is the money you are making decent? Or should you rather not think about the money and just write/blog for the fun of it?

I'm asking because I was thinking about starting a blog to improve my writing skills. (The more you write the better you get, right?). And I'm also thinking of ways to supplement my income. So I wondered, why not do both?

Any tips you have with starting and maintaining a blog would be welcomed; along with tips of how to generate and increase the blog's income.

I've also been exploring monetising my blog (registered my own domain name last night - link in my sig) because it's getting a reasonable amount of traffic. I've looked around and most places recommend advertising, and the usual jazz. Unfortunately these solutions only work if your traffic is literally in the hundreds of thousands of hits.

I can't link to the post atm (blocked at work) but there was another blog where the guy gave the following advice:

1) Use your blog to sell your product (ebook, homemade toys, etc)
2) Use affiliate marketing (I'm not sure if I'm using the right expression here, but it's where he would review a product and then contact the manufacturer for an affiliate link to a page where the product was sold. Every time someone bought the product by clicking the link, he would get a cut of it. He said this was very successful for him).

He gave some more advice but I can't remember it off the top of my head. If I remember I'll link to it after work.

Yeah start the blog and brush up on some skills. start with the difference between shall and will.

You should do it. A Sex and the City blog. Go out and bang as many different people in as many different ways and report about it, will be a hit.

I can imagine the ads on a sex blog would draw a bit of income from pictures alone
