During fierce clashes in and around the city, police on several occasions opened fire with rubber bullets on the demonstrators, who came from KwaZulu-Natal, Free State, North West, Limpopo, Mpumalanga and Gauteng.

why rubber bullets :(

Taxi drivers also blocked paramedics from ER24

OMG.. what a bunch of !@#)(..

Yeah yeah

And of course they will keep killing each other regardless since they "live by the sword". Somehow they think they will get sympathy with that attitude.

They're not looking sympathy - they just want to use intimidation to get their way.
Fear and intimidation is their way of life as it has been for centuries even before the white man came here.

Ok I'm a bit ignorant about the recap program so can someone tell me why they want to replace the taxis? What is government's motivation behind it?

I mean 5 years down the road (excuse the pun) the new taxis are going to be falling apart just as much as the ones they drive at the moment - the only difference is that now it'll be 30+ people in the vehicle when a tire bursts or it hits a truck head on instead of ~20.

Uhm no, those Taxi's on the road right now are all much older than just 3 years. The Goverment wants to rid the road of unroadworthy Taxi's or otherwise before 2010. And they probably will, I don't think they'll let this one slip, if they bend now the Taxi drivers will just do what they want and further more 2010 is on the line.

I have already decided a long time ago before this whole thing that if some guy gets out of his taxi or try's to hijack me he better not be infront of my car because I don't care about running them over, and I'm not stopping. They are criminals and if they wanna play they've gotta pay. I never stop at red lights anymore (I don't run them :D i just kinda have a slow approach when I see a light is red) and I never stop infront of my gate (got it timed very carefully, so that it's open just enough for my car when I get to it and closes immediatly after i'm through) and I'm always ready to run any person over that tries anything(if they slip through the open gate I always have my reverse gear) ;) You have to protect yourself and it's become a wild west in South Africa where your safety and the roads are concerned so you have to do what you can esp. with this taxi thing going on.

A Pretoria taxi driver said if the programme went ahead they would stop the 2010 Soccer World Cup.

That has got to be THE BEST yet.

Taxi Organisations = Our Shadow Government

The Taxi Corps :D
Zuma wants you!
for the Taxi Corps....

They think they can win a battle against the Goverment, Police and Army all together. Money talks and they don't have enough money to counter 2010 nevermind by force.

Taxis worth R150 000 ? 90% of the taxis I've seen I wouldnt pay R5000 for the Government is doing them a favour R50 000 and the payment option on the R250 000 is probably over 20 years or something silly.

We all know the type of intellect that a taxi driver has, does this mean that the owners of the anti-worldcup anti-crime websites are of the same intellect as a taxi driver? ;)

I say shoot the bastards with rubber bullets in the balls and then lock them up without medical treatment (seeing that they're blocking ambulances and paramedics).

And since when is violence the way to solve a crisis?
That is nonsense.

I say the Government must stick to their proposals and deadlines and those that do not want to tow the line can literally be towed to the Compound.

Even people that are Taxi Driver's themselves are ashamed of their Industry.
A right royal f-up IMO.

I think the passengers/consumers should boycott the Taxi Operators and rather opt to take the train, bus or any other mode of transport to get to work.
Even request help from their places of employment?
Failing which I don't know.

No doubt about it.

Unfortunately the majority of these consumers have no other choice - bus drivers are intimidated/shot, people are thrown off trains.

http://www.iol.co.za/index.php?set_id=1&click_id=13&art_id=vn20061028084924557C302649Clearly there is a collective delusion amongst Blaxi drivers where they believe that their vehicles [often stolen from someone else] which are usually missing something essential like brakes or a steering wheel etc etc etc, are somehow worth R150k...

IMO guavamint is wasting taxpayer's money here [surprised - not], and should rather buy each unhappy Blaxi driver a 1-way plane ticket Siberia...

What did the (few) people in Siberia ever do to you. ;)

OMW that's the funniest thing ever!! :D Just made my Sunday morning ROFL.

Spot on, but what did Siberia ever do to you? :D I would say use them as test monkeys for interplanetary space travel. Always wanted to know if Pluto is inhabitable...
