Braaivleis to measure South Africa's real inflation — Bloomberg launches Shisa Nyama index

On any given weekend in South Africa there’s the smell of shisa nyama — the Zulu term for traditional barbecues — wafting across cities, townships and rural locations.

But the cost of the typical fare that makes up a shisa nyama is rising faster than official inflation, highlighting the stark reality that low-income earners are suffering the most in South Africa — one of the world’s most unequal nations.

Not one of the worlds most, it is the #1 most unequal country in the world.

"South Africa is the most unequal country in the world, with race playing a determining factor in a society where 10 percent of the population owns more than 80 percent of the wealth, a World Bank report has said."

Don't worry...emigration will soon sort out those numbers.

Race is not the best indicator for wealth. Only for poverty.

There are many rich black people in South Africa. They got rich for many of the same reasons white or coloured people get very rich.

Education, opportunity, influence and power.

Take away the above, and you get people stuck in their circumstances.

Myth and Measurement by David Card, Alan B. Krueger:
Some of the most innovative recent studies build on our New Jersey-Pennsylvania study, looking at the effects of state-wide minimum wages using comparisons between counties on opposite sides of a state border (Dube, Lester, and Reich, 2010; Dube, Lester, and Reich, 2015). By combining multiple pairs of counties and pooling data for multiple years, these studies are able to provide credible and relatively precise estimates of the effect of minimum wage increases. The estimated employment effects of minimum wages from this approach cluster around zero. Other compelling studies focus on the experiences at specific retail-sector firms that operate similar stores in different states (e.g., Giuliano, 2013; Hirsch, Kaufman, and Zelensa, 2015). Again, the employment effects estimated by these studies are typically small and sometimes positive rather than negative.
taken from a recent meta-analysis of 23 minimum wage studies published between 2000 and 2013 by Belman and Wolfson (2014), shows the distribution of estimated elasticities of employment or hours with respect to the minimum wage.9 The median of the 439 estimates from these studies is -0.05; the precision-weighted mean and median, which take account of the sampling errors of the individual estimates, are both -0.03. Essentially, the literature after Myth and Measurement was about equally likely to find positive as negative employment effects of the minimum wage, with the typical estimate very close to zero.

Ah inflation, the slow downward spiral towards famine, now measured by a "meat" (not balanced meal) index.

Sadly, delighting the masses.
How do you spell out in no uncertain terms that with the current stock of retards, soon it'll be the bone soup index.

Do you only have meat at a braai?

To me, it's a ritual started by lighting a fire (Wood, not charcoal) while enjoying stimulating conversation and drinks with good friends and family. Once the coals are ready and there is a side fire ensuring a constant supply of coals, the meat is put on the grid while the roast veg or stir fry is put onto the grid a bit later in a cast iron pan. On the side, a bread is baking inside a cast iron pan with a lid while the coals cook maize meal in a three legged pot.

All served with a salad and feta cheese. and a geselsvuurtjie afterwards.

Sounds balanced to me.

Or do you braai like this?

Even these figures are wrong. Real inflation in SA is at around 38-45%.

The total cost of buying all of the supplies in bulk to prepare a shisa nyama for friends and family has risen 24% to 1,756 rand, from 1,414 rand in January 2021.
