I dont believe this..... DEFINE Pirate. A computer cant tell what is pirated. This SONY being an ass-ole again. DVD's are encrypted, the PS2 and XBOX can only play original games... yeah right!, pull the other leg.

If its a MP3 disk, it is within the "Fair Usage" clause that I can listen to the songs in my car and on my iPOD... and are they pirated? NO - but they are not originals!

One part of the announcement that had been anticipated by experts was Blu-ray's embrace of Advanced Access Content System (AACS), one version of which has also been adopted by the HD DVD Forum. This controversial technology would require that disc players maintain permanent connections to content providers via the Internet, making it possible for discs that fail a security check to trigger a notification process, enabling the provider to send the player a sort of "self-destruct code." This code would come in the form of a flash ROM "update" that would actually render the player useless, perhaps unless and until it is taken to a repair shop for reprogramming. The Blu-ray statement noted that certain elements of AACS have yet to be formally approved by the BDA.

Just set up a firewall between the BR player and the net and stop it from downloading.

i'm sure there will be hacked firmware available within weeks!

Yes you can. Without HDCP the image will display in 480p and not 720p/1080i/1080p.

Well if they implement this blue ray as a format will self destruct. Anybody remember in the 80's when applications started using dongles. None of those applications still exist today....

As far as I'm aware this is a function of AACS and not the media formats. As such both HD-DVD and Blu-Ray will have this "functionality".

I don't know about other people but I am more than happy with current dvd's and will will probably be for quite a few years to come. The only use I can see for higher capaciity disks in my life is for computer data backups..

The shift from vhs to dvd was huge... from dvd to blue ray/hd dvd really does not excite me too much...

If the "bios" flash rom code can be re-programmed, this opens up a whole new area for viruses and malware. Imagine firing up your player and being greeted by "All your Blu-Ray are belong to us!"

There are however still apps that use dongles. The high-end Steinberg stuff like Cubase does.

Yes high-end applicaitons...all the mainstream ones died and in most cases were pushed out of the market by applications without any copy protection due to the higher adoption of these products....

My wife has an embroidery machine and the designer software uses a dongle to operate. ... a rather niche market and the software is rather expensive.

The digital watermarking technique, which will be called ROM Mark, is described in the statement as "a unique and undetectable identifier in pre-recorded BD-ROM media such as movies, music and games."[/qoute]

If something is undetectable, not even a machine can read it...

If a machine can read it, it is detectable and only a matter of time before some 16 year old busts it.
