H,

I've now given up trying to find a decently priced Blu-Ray player with 8ch analogue outputs in South-Africa. I can't believe how poorly the big companies are releasing Blu-Ray players here.

I have stopped buying DVDs about a year ago and I'm starting to go into withdrawal. As an interim measure I am considering putting a Blue-Ray drive in my PC.

Does anyone have experience with the bundled software that come with the drives, will it be sufficient to drive my 720p projector, or will have have to upgrade the software or buy separate. Same question for DTS/DD5.1 sound.

What Blu-Ray drive will you recommend for this?

Is anyone using a similar setup at the moment?

Thanks.

I don't think it'll be drive dependent.

Your PC will need to be strong enough to output 720p and you'll need a decent soundcard?

The PC can handle it. I am not concerned about the HD soundtracks for the moment, this will only be an interim solution, I just want to start buying BD movies and be able to watch them. I will be using the soundcard's optical output for the sound. The final solution will be a BD player with 8ch audio out.

Have you considered importing a BD-player?

The panasonic BD55 has analogue outs: http://www.techradar.com/reviews/audio-visual/blu-ray-players/panasonic-dmp-bd55-464519/review

I know of someone on another forum that bought the Panasonic BD35 from Amazon.co.uk, so I am sure you would be able to do the same:

I have no idea how he managed to import with Amazon, they do not ship anything but books and disks to SA. That is the model I am trying to get in SA btw, but Panasonic SA have no plans to release it.

The reason for my post is I read somewhere that the software provided with the ROM drives are a bit cripple, it's not able to provide proper HD output, is this true, can someone comment on this or suggest alternative software?

I don't want to have to spend another R500+ on software after I bought the drive.

Any suggestions for BD ROMs?

I have no experience with Blu-ray ROMs so can't comment.

But I suggest you visit avforums.com and avsforum.com, there is a wealth of information on anything AV and someone there should be able to answer your questions.

Buy a Play Station 3.

I got a PS3 for XMas last year. I was very bleak with my best friend for doing so and even considered sending it back.

Then I played a BluRay movie.

Now I use it more as a media player than for gaming. I have a 500Gb drive hooked up via USB, and use the PS3 to watch stuff. It upscales everything nicely, and the sound goes into my 6.2 home theatre :D

BD rom will work for your needs. I have the LG GCC-H20L, it comes with PowerDVD 7.3. You will have to update it, (80 meg) to play movies.

Or you could rip them using (AnyDVD HD) and playback with MPC-HC.

Read "HD to MKV the options are endless..." on avsforum

When will the good Blu ray players come to SA

I agree that Blu ray players are overpriced in SA. About a month ago, Amazon had the Samsung BD-P3600 on a special with four Blu rays for about R2400. (A pity they do not import players to South Africa.) If anyone have hands on experience with this player please help write a review on this Blu ray player at www.bluraydvd.co.za. In addition, if you know of any other ‘cheaper’ Blu ray players that convert all HD audio to 7.1 channel HDMI LPCM let me know. Just like the Ps3.
