Gonna resurrect this dead as disco thread...

I've forced myself into the market for a "nused" vehicle after writing my beloved old mazda double cab off a few weeks ago.

The logical part of my brain is leaning towards the BMW diesels from an economy and engine reliability point of view, but the 2 year old in me still wants a nice-to-look-at and fun to drive set of wheels. Torn between the 520d MSport (with literally every bell and whistle under the sun) and the 320D MSport... They would all be around 2012/2013 models....

I'm aware the 3 series will be a more fun drive, but I do 100kms to and from work every day so also considering cruising ability of the 5 series. That and the fact that it looks like a decent gangster ride :p
Anybody have any personal experiences with each model that they'd feel like sharing?

If it does not have the 8.8 wide screen and it is pre 2015 model on the 3 series it won't stream audio.
There is 1% chance it might have bluetooth streaming option fitted, this required a combox to be fitted in the boot, which then allows it. Don't think there will be many card that did spec that.

Well that almost instantly wipes out the 320D in my price range.... I will still go look and double check, but thanks for the heads up.

100km/day, definitely the 5.

I had a 530d and now have a 335i, do 80km/day.

Diesel BMW, you won’t go wrong with any but the 5 should do.

Meh... Confirming mostly where my head was going already and of course it would be the more expensive car as well....

Logic has somehow got the better of me and I'm walking away from the 5 series.. It has too much tech in it for a 6 yr old car... Digital dash and all that... No warranty will save me if that fscks out...

The 5er has very much an analogue dash. The only digital part is the alongside the bottom. Unless you are referring to that.

Latest 5er finally got an all digital dash.

The one I was looking at had the full digital dash option... Along with the pro navigation add on....

Yip BMW wanted to charge me R3k extra in 2013 to have streaming audio as an option. Pathetic considering many entry level vehicles have this as standard. They were not even interested in "thowing it in".
Ja, ok, it would have been nice to have it, though I have a usb thumb drive plugged in and that servers me plenty of tunes. The upgraded Harman Kardon system is pretty decent too.

Hope you find something awesome in its place! I was under the impression that the F10 was a pretty reliable piece of kit?

Only get the 5series if you plan on keeping it till the wheels fall off, depreciation on those things is beyond hectic.

Nevermind that right before you sell it you would have no doubt just spent R50k on something innocuous like shocks all round and then after trying to sell it on Gumtree for 4 months for a reasonable price of just over a R100k you have to finally give it away for R70k

Mechanically yes... But digitally who knows. The instrument cluster is a r80k piece of kit all in its own.
