After starting and idling my bike for a few minutes yesterday I saw that it had dripped a puddle of petrol. Followed this back to where the hose connects and identified cracks in the female coupling mount.

Now I see that this model was the subject of a recall in 2014 that was meant to address this exact issue. I have been the owner since new but never received any notice of this. Does anyone know answers to these questions:

Was this recall done in SA?
Would BMW still honor repairs to the defect? This was a R6,000+ part/repair at the beginning of this year.
When are workshops expected to open again?

TIA

Typically they address recalls when you come in for a service (if it is not safety related). Call your closest dealer and see what they will do. Personally I'd expect them to take care of it, but that is based on my dealings with Donford (WC branches). And I'd suggest making sure any other relevant recalls have been done at the same time

I'm confused about you only saying it yesterday but the repair was R6k earlier this year?

I inferred the estimated cost based on two other recent threads I found online: one USA thread complaining that the dealer still wanted to charge him $300 for this repair and another on a local forum from Jan from a rider with a similar fuel pump leak problem where the dealer had quoted him R5,990 to replace the pump.

I would have thought that fuel dribbling past the exhaust would have been an extremely high priority safety issue. Gave me quite a fright. I would have preferred to have been informed about this and been able to take the preventative maintenance option. My bike has very low kms and I change the oil and filters myself so has not seen a dealer for a while.

The plastic coupling mount is pathologically cracked, so a new o-ring (which was my first hope) won't help.

If faced by a potential bill of R6K I'd be tempted to try something like this:

Clean it up, key it properly and apply the epoxy up and over the hex fitting.

Thank you. I was wondering if it could be repaired with epoxy but was worried about pressure and petrol. This looks like it might be up to the job. At the least as as emergency fix.

I've used it on all sorts of things, and very successfully. I can vouch for the pressure and heat capacity - I did an emergency fix to the radiator expansion bottle on a car some 4 years ago, turned out to be a permanent fix. Some plastics though defy adhesion to some epoxies, so for the best chance you really need to prep the surface/s.

Just to follow up: I contacted the BMW dealer I bought the bike from and without hesitation they arranged to collect the bike, replaced the fuel pump and while they were at it did three other "campaigns" for the bike: aux fuel pump ring, real wheel flange and front brake line. They said that it would probably have cost me R12k to do that lot but BMW picked up the tab.

Hi Spoed. Pls can you share which BMW dealer helped you with this, as I would like to contact him for advice. I have developed a fuel leak on my K1600, and have been told my local dealer that although this bike is listed for recall, there is no campaign on my vin number, and therefore is not covered - it will be +-R8500
