Hi,

So i am tired of the normal lagers i drink everyday (i know, i should be drinking ale etc, but i hate the stuff).
I have had some (what i think) very nice lager type stuff overseas, and want to try either get them here or try something new.

Two of the ones i am looknig for
ozujsko pivo
kronenbourg 1664
zambezi

If anyone knows of a decent store that might stock these or have some other imported stuff, let me know.
I've tried bootleggers and makro, but they dont seem to have anything exciting

I'm not sure about Imported beers, but local bottle stores that have a really good range of non-traditional (read: SAB) beers are Loco Liquor in Blairgowrie, Linden discount liquor and Liquor city in Northcliff.
They stock most of the local craft brews as well.

im probably going to get lambasted here, because i actually dont know what qualifies as an ale. I just know what isnt a lager.

But i have tried various beers from the Fullers range, gilroys, mitchells, draymens etc.

If you can recommend something i will try it, but I have resigned myself to the fact that I am a lager boy

I'm keen to try some ale, which would you recommend?

Your in JHB so you cant go wrong with Gilroys. (www.gilroybeers.co.za)
Start with the pale ale/ lager and then try the others.

in PTA Draymans have a good selection of nice beers.(http://www.draymans.com/)

Just be prepared they are very different to SAB types of beers(much less carbonated and more flavor)

Both beers can be bought at their locations as well as at some Makro and Tops shops.

I also enjoy copper lake but haven't seen them in my local Makro yet.

But the point is to look for a good locally produced microbrewery beer be it a ale, lager or whatever and give it a try.
Beer was not designed to sit in the sun or hot trucks traveling the world.

People prefer different things there's no problem in admitting you prefer lagers but if you have been drinking lager all your life and someone gives you an Irish stout with strong flavors its wildly different from what you expected beer to taste like.

Lager actually means "to store" and you can lager practically anything but in SA it means a very light highly carbonated beer.

Did you try Gilroys favourtie or lager or Draymans Berghof ?

The Liquor City outlets have a semi-decent range of imported beers. Mostly Weissbeers

I tried berghof and didnt dislike it, but didnt really enjoy it either.

I have tried all of gilroys range. Again, i didnt really enjoy them, i didnt even like their version of a lager. It seemed quite flat

Then there is no hope for you :erm:

Ale's are typically flat but I do think Gilroys beers can sometimes be too flat.

Have you tried some pilsner or wheat beers?
