I bought a new router/modem TP-Link AC1600 Vr600 today. My old Trendnet unit's wifi was not performing well anymore, so decided to upgrade.

Started chatting to NordVPN guys to see why the new modem/router is slow and struggling to connect to Prime.

The lad points out to me that my router/modem cant be flashed (I had to go look it up) and Nord will not be supporting the protocols of the specific router/modem in the near future. Serious security concerns I hear.

Now, is the flashable router/modem really such a big worry? It is a OpenVPN/PPTP server, but not a client. It also lists IPSec. So, my NordVPN service is not going to gel with my new router/modem.

Fark me, I cant keep up with all this security related problems. Wasted R3000 bucks today it seems.

If you don't want it, why don't you return it?

For that price or slightly more you might be able to get an industrial router, with OpenVPN client support. The industrial routers are supported by the manufacturer for a longer period than consumer products.

That is what I am considering.

My understanding of the subject is simply not good enough by a long shot to know all the right questions and answers.

If I have NordVPN installed on my laptop and phone - does it matter that my router/modem is not flash-able - do I then still need to activate the VPN on it?

If you have the VPN client on the phone and laptop then you should not need a VPN capable router.
