A seven-year-old boy survived six freezing days in the veld without any food or water and with his hands and feet tied with wire.
Police said yesterday that the child, a grade 2 pupil from Delmas in Mpumalanga, was allegedly left for dead in a mealie field by his mother’s former boyfriend.
Incredibly, after an intensive search lasting almost a week, the boy was found, dehydrated, freezing and in shock – but very much alive.
Police said the former boyfriend of the boy’s mother fetched the child from his school, Othandweni Primary School in Botleng township, on April 21.
Instead of taking the child home, the 36-year-old man, who was riding a bi- cycle, allegedly took him to a mealie field, tied him up and left him to die.
The child’s mother reported him missing the same day.
After a frantic search involving the police and community members the child was found in the field six days later.
He was rushed to the Delmas Hospital, where he was treated for dehydration and shock and later discharged.
Police said the boy’s mother had ended the relationship with her boyfriend in March after a four-year relationship, which she described as “abusive”.
Delmas police spokesman Constable Ntombifuthi Mashiane said yesterday police were investigating the case.
She said a suspect had been arrested and had appeared briefly in the local magistrates’ court last Friday in connection with a charge of kidnapping.
The suspect was not asked to plead and was remanded until this Friday.
Teachers, pupils and local councillors protested outside the court last week, calling for bail to be denied.
