Brace for taxes — Parliament passes NHI bill

South Africa’s National Assembly approved a new law that will pave the way for the introduction of universal health insurance, a plan its critics argue will be financially unsustainable and impossible to implement effectively.

The National Health Insurance (NHI) Bill aims to ensure all South Africans have access to quality healthcare services and provides for the establishment of a fund that will be used to pay for almost all medical treatment from accredited providers, with rates to be determined by the state.

Sounds like the French healthcare system, a disaster

My understanding is this still needs to be signed into law? And has many hurdles to go through first?

It is now going to the council of provinces for public consultations. When that it done CR can sign it into law. After that parties can start taking it to court. For now there is nothing to take to court.

Yeah, there is still a while to go. But this Bill, after the absolute cluster**** of Eskom, is the second biggest threat to SA's future. This is where many people I know (and I count myself in that) draw a line in the sand. At some point this madness has to end. I pay so much taxes it makes my stomach churn. Got a surprise 14th and the amount deducted from tax is stupid. And what makes it so infuriating is knowing these assholes in Government misuse all of our tax, to the point where they are running around in designer labels and watches that cost hundreds of grands...

Just with loadshedding. You aint going to do **** for this either

I can afford alternative power. With NHI, there will be no private healthcare. Healthcare will be utterly decimated in South Africa, and you would have to go abroad for a decent level of care.

And, I am someone who has "done something" in the activist sense, when very few people on these forums did squat. Next time don't make baseless assumptions. I have been around here for a long time.

I hear you. I try not look at what tax I pay. I got paid a 300% bonus in April. That hurt to see how much I handed over to this government.

Government will never be as efficient as private companies competing for members.

Even in a world where 2mill people could pay for the health costs of 50mill, there will be so much wastage.
