Sounds like it was staged.

Seems very much an insider job:
Daily Maverick has confirmed that Lwazi Mzobe, spokesperson for the newly established Liberation Struggle War Veterans, which sprung up when the MK Military Veterans Association was disbanded as an ANC structure, is employed by the eThekwini Municipality.

Mzobe was the leader of the vets who first staged a sleep-in at the ANC’s Luthuli House headquarters this week and who then took Defence and Military Veterans Minister Thandi Modise, Minister in the Presidency Mondli Gungubele and Deputy Defence and Military Veterans Minister Thabang Makwetla hostage at the St George’s Hotel on Thursday.
Many veterans, like Mzobe, work in the public sector. He is a writer at the municipality, Tehekwini Council Spokesperson Msawakhe Mayisela confirmed to Daily Maverick on Friday morning. These positions are well paid with public-sector benefits including medical care, study grants and housing allowances.

Inside job how? They do seem to want riches handed to them for nothing. It's actually the leaders who do the agitating and only they get rewarded while the foot soldiers must do with just a grant here and there.

How does one sign up to become a "vet"?
Dress up like a wally in oversized fatigues (especially artic camo) and random berets/baseball caps/dustbin lids...and flip flops or gumboots...
Try not to shoot yourself, and more importantly, try not to shoot your comrades, Voters are needed...
Wait to get promoted....
Sit back under the tree and reap the rewards....

And learn to do a forward roll while "marching". :)

I can understand their frustrations, they were promised some things which never materialised.

At least in Zimbabwe and Mozambique, their ex combatants were taken care of. My neighbour in Mozambique served in the war and has a nice piece of land, house with a salary each month and paid schooling and medical for his family.
These weren't Veterans.
These were common crooks and chancers.
MKVets, Apla, TBVC and other bodies absorbed into the SANDF in 1993 and given pensions and other benefits.
In 1993 - 15,416 MK & APLA were given gratuity payments amounted to around R225 million (nearly R1 billion today)
In 2011 Military Veterans Act, establishing the Dept of Military Veterans with a R650m annual budget.

See: ‘Military veterans’ more like a gang of criminals threatening the nation

The daily maverick article is well worth a read:
  • 29 have previous convictions for “minor cases”
  • 11 have previous serious convictions “which include murder, kidnapping, armed robbery, rape etc”.
  • One was previously integrated into SANDF - and dishonorably discharged in 1998
  • Group leader Lwazi Mzobe served 15 years in prison for murder, attempted murder and robbery with aggravating circumstances
  • Mzobe took part in blocking the N3 in April 2021 (burning trucks) and attacking foreign traders in September and November 2020 and is employed by the eThekwini municipality
  • Muzukisi Ronyuza did time for possessing forged bank notes
  • Sabata Nhlankana was convicted on three previous cases of car theft and rape
etc
