I think this rate only includes "people that have actively looked for work in the last 6 months." Don't know how the government calculates this, but recently an article removed this from the calculation and came to 39% unemployment or so.

Why Is anyone even surprised at this? High unemployment is all we've known since 94....not so?
It was rapidly climbing in the 1980s. Probably going back to the 1970s. That was in spite of the government trying to mop of unemployed and unemployable white people by creating government jobs. Also in spite of totally lax labour laws that essentially allowed employers to fire at will.

people wanting to insert themselves as intermediaries

You see this everywhere.. I’m not even in sales but get regular calls on ‘assisting’ with pre-sales to secure a deal etc and then there is a placement/securing fee and it can’t be in the invoice etc. usual corrupt practices seen in a few countries not just SA.

I love asking the awkward questions when these guys are dumb enough to approach.. ie why can’t I handle the RFP directly, why is your % so huge, why isn’t it on the quote, what % of work they will do, etc basically making it hard for them not to admit it’s some sort of fraud dealing.

There is usually much more outrage over things like the K-word and old flags that about heartbreaking ANC failures like this.

This is nonsense. Put them on probation up to six month or put them on a performance plan and you can rid of them in 12 months max.
Doesn't quite work that way - permanent after 6 months max (which is deemed reasonable)

Probation Period
The Code of Good Practice (Schedule 8 of Labour Relations Act) only stipulates that a probationary period should be of reasonable duration, negotiated and stipulated in the employment contract. ... The employer may either extend the probationary period or dismiss the worker.

according to current labour laws,

1) max of probation period is 3 months, not 6, afterward, he / she is permanent.
2) you are not allowed to fire (you are fired) any person even the person is on probation or temporary or contract. that you must set up a meeting with the person you said he / she is underperformance. you have to give enough support to train him / her to do the job. if he / she still can't do it, you must find he / she the alternative up until the probation period is finished. otherwise that is unfair dismissal.
3) any employer is willing to feed a new employee for 12 months for doing nothing?

I know someone who works for government and started at 12 months probation. They have a boss from hell who has extended the probation so they'll be on probation for at least 18 months. Claim was they failed to perform to agreed standard.

I’m very qualified and unemployed for 12 months already and absolutely nothing in sight. The situation is pretty damn bad.
