MELBOURNE, Australia (AP) - New Zealand opener Brendon McCullum gained some small consolation by being named captain of the team of the World Cup on Monday, a day after the Black Caps lost the final by seven wickets to Australia.

McCullum scored 328 runs in nine matches with four half-centuries, but was out for a duck in the first over of the final.

The team chosen by an International Cricket Council panel included four other New Zealanders - Corey Anderson, Trent Boult, Martin Guptill and Daniel Vettori.

There were three Australians - Glenn Maxwell, Steven Smith and Mitchell Starc - two South Africans, A.B. de Villiers and Morne Morkel, and Sri Lanka's Kumar Sangakkara as wicketkeeper-batsman.

Starc was also named player of the tournament following Sunday's final at the Melbourne Cricket Ground.

The final just proved that SA should've been there instead of NZ. I still believe that we would've beaten NZ if all the overs were played.

I agree, but our biggest problem was that our top bowler, Steyn did not perform as we know he can. He would have made any world side if he bowled like we are used to seeing.

Fact is, we lost in the semi. One can say we were ''robbed'' of overs, but we had more than enough opportunities to win that match. Two botched run outs and two fluffed catches.

New Zealand lost once in the whole tournament and that happened in the final. The two best teams made the final, just unfortunately for the Black Caps the Aussies got stronger as the tournament progressed and the Black Caps ran into a freight train in the final.

We had more than enough opportunities, except for the part of the game where we did best. It was usually the last bunch of overs where we shined, in virtually every game. There wasn't a single team in this world cup who did better than we did in the last bunch, was there?
We didn't get to play the full 50 so we'll never know. I confidently stand by my opinion.

*Side note, nowhere did I say we were "robbed" or it was unfair, it is what it is. ;)
