Taking the fight to Takealot

South Africa’s top brick-and-mortar retailers, including Shoprite, Woolworths, and Massmart, are improving their ecommerce capabilities to become bigger online shopping players.

Takealot is South Africa’s largest ecommerce company, with a gross merchandise value (GMV) of $1,493 (R26.9 billion). GMV is the total value of merchandise sold.

Remember when Everyshop was trying to take on Takealot and the likes. MyBB had them in almost every comparison. Now they are as quiet as a church mouse. I see their site still exists, but I've seen zero advertising about them?

You should know that the "take on Takealot" drivel is usually added by the writer, or quote harvested by asking such a question.

Just like Openview that is always touted as " dstv competitor".

No competition.

Checkers for food sure.

Massmart is done, they will leave SA this decade, they just cannot compete.

Makro is completely useless at online sales and delivery. Standard in stock items took almost 3 weeks to be delivered and this after numerous calls to follow up. They are out of the market.
This. Additionally, I also dont know when last I have been to a Makro store. They dont keep their entire product catalogue online, i.e. you have to go to the store to buy certain things. Secondly, searching in Makro website for the product is mission impossible.

Takealot lost the plot with their pickup points that are located in major centres. Pargo you can pick any existing PEP or Clicks.

Why is that? Had good service most of the time from them. Sometimes the prices and specials seem retarded.

But overall experience would give them a solid 8/10.
Their pricing is no longer competitive and most items can be found cheaper elsewhere, with comparable service.

Shipping a product with Pargo probably costs quite a bit more than what it costs Takealot to ship a product to one of its pickup points (which also act as distribution centres for their own delivery fleet)

Think about it like this: how many items will go to the local clicks store via pargo for collection vs going to the pickup point. The pickup point probably takes a few orders of magnitude more parcels in from the big warehouse than your local clicks, which means there are more items to share the delivery costs over.

Only thing that will take on takealot and win is Amazon.
And they are in no rush.

Anbody who can offer similiar products BUT with a choice of delivery time-sames as PnP- will murder them. I am sick of sitting at home all day hoping a delivery will arrive !!

I have bought food from Woollie's online. Was pretty easy. I don't order often because a person can sell his birth-right only so many times, but the experience was pretty good.

I used to be happy with them too. Then, on consecutive orders: delivery vehicle hijacked, they didn't replace the item, I got refunded and had to buy it elsewhere.. then generic items delivered with no reply from them when asked why they stated it is original on their website. Delayed orders... list goes on
