British Airways gets fined R430 million for data breach

British Airways was fined 20 million pounds (R430 million) by the U.K. data protection watchdog over a breach that compromised the personal and financial details of more than 400,000 customers, a cut to a much heftier fine initially planned by the regulator.

The U.K. Information Commissioners’ Office on Friday said its investigation into a 2018 cyber attack at the company found that “the airline was processing a significant amount of personal data without adequate security measures in place,” exposing people’s data unnecessarily.

The fine is the ICO’s biggest so far.

my thoughts exactly, sure EU have GDPR and its in enforceable effect but that was only 400k records, a far cry from the number Experian just handed over.
Well to be fair, storing credit card info in plain text in BA's case is a bit further down the road. That said, BA were fined by the government that oversees them. Experian... *cough*

Yup, the BA leak can be used more directly for fraud. The Experian one though is already proving to be a goldmine for identity theft and other fraudulent activities.

True. The Experian one is the gift that will keep giving into the future. Cancelling your CC is a simple solution to the BA issue.
Talking about that... I don't think I've used BA in about 5 years so I should be OK on that front.
