But why? I thought they had infrastructure from the Transnet?

They did 'have it' until government decided it would be better to keep the backhaul links for itself in Infraco. Except that now Infraco is still not licensed. Oops.

Ironic, isn't it? Infraco and the Department of Public Enterprises get lambasted for trying to fix a collosal ****-up that originated in the Department of Communications...

Why don't Infraco just give up and hand the infrastrucutre to Neotel? They are clearly not equipped to deliver what they have promised Neotel so why not cut their losses and let the SNO get on with the job?

While awaiting a licence, Infraco would piggy-back as a subcontractor on to the telecommunications licence of second national operator Neotel and provide it exclusively with bulk broadband infrastructure for about two years.
So .. does this mean that Neotel is somehow not being allowed to build infrastructure? Or does it mean that Neotel do not want to build infrastructure? I'm confused. Did they NOT apply for and get the fixed line telecoms license? Why the heck to they need Infraco?

Methinks something is being hiddened.

 so, guavamint having failed with the Broadband Infraco Bill, now wants to change the ECA to accomodate guavamint incompetence and thick-headedness???

Oh well as long as SA's dem-o-crackzy is being thrown out the window, why worry about trampling over the public's Constitutional Right to Freedom of Speech, next guavamint will be wanting to amend The Constitution to prevent anyone from saying how wrong the whole Infak@k concept is...

It's like guavamint actually doesn't want any infrastructural investment and are actively telling anyone considering investing in national fibre optic networks, to buzz off...

Neotel can build infrastructure, but it will take time and lots of money. Just think how long and how much it would cost to connect PTA, Jozi, CPT, DBN and PE, not to mention the extensive local networks that would be necessary to connect potential businesses and houses. Infraco, through the purchase of Eskom's and Transtel's networks already have this in place.

However, this sparks of govt thinking they know all the answers and nobody can tell them anything. If they consulted more widely, this far simpler solution would have appeard much sooner. I still dont know the economic rational why Infraco should have been established when it did rather than sell the infrastructure to Neotel and start developing its own infrastructure in the next few years after applying for the necessary licences.

Agreed ic.

That quote from the article concerned me the most as well. Had to read it twice to understand that they are still having the means to screw the private sector and the public at large.

This was the deal that was initially in place, but as ever govt decides that they need to control the pie with our money and now do us in even more.
