Good day all,
Out of desperation I'm sending out a distress call in the forums. (Apologies if this forum is not the appropriate one.).
The problem:
Having moved to Ruimsig, Roodepoort a couple of months ago, I've come to realise that this suburb seems to be the least most connectable area in Jo'burg. To exasperate the problem, I phoned Telkom, prior to signing my lease, at which time the consultant ensured me that ADSL services would be available in the area. (I provided the exact address of the complex, street names etc.). (Lie no. 1)
Fast forward to a month later, after placing the order with Telkom, I was politely informed that my order cannot be fulfilled, as Telkom has no "infrastructure" in the area. (I suspect this to be untrue as well, as I pass a really pretty looking green and blue 4ft. metal structure, with a logo that strangely looks similar to Telkom's, on my way into the complex gate.) (Lie no. 2).
The nature of my work allows me to work from home, but to do so I'm in need of reliable internet connectivity, with some more than usual capacity. (I do a lot of custom compiles for various flavours of Linux and Solaris, and as such I often mirror distro's from IS's FTP server.). I also need a "stable" connection for connecting to VPN's and SSH operations.
So out of desperation I'm using Vodacom(n) 3G with a 3G Wireless Router. Vodacom claims to have 3G coverage in the Ruimsig area, but I'm about to note that as being Lie no. 3. The modem might connect at 3G speeds, but achieving anything above 30 Kb/s is nearly impossible. Some days a ping roundtrip to IS's FTP server can take up to 2s!! (that's seconds not miliseconds). (This happens when using both the wireless router and when plugging directly into my laptop). Additionally this will not be feasible in the long term, as 5GB's usage runs to R720/month, and I'll end up using about 20GB during the course of a month.
(That's if I can achieve decent speeds, awaiting one of those Poynting antennae to be delivered this week).
I've spent the last two months looking for alternatives, and so far the following providers have also been rules out:
Neotel - No coverage/weak coverage
iBurst - Weak coverage
Amobia - No line of sight
Emburst - Costly/Low Speeds
So, if any of the forumites have any other suggestions, could you please share them, as I am at my whit's end!! Any input/suggestions will be welcome!
