Broadband speeds: South Africa drops back

don't worry. spermcount's plans to increase to 40mbps will raise our average to around 20mbps, because half the country's population will be on that due to its excellent value for money.

Only 0.5% of the population will be able to afford 40mbps, so it won't help a bit.

new day, same old story

every month we see the same thing repeated on myBB, I don't know why they bother

Don't worry guys, Telkom assures us that they have a "world class network"! :D

Telkom recently announced that it will be launching a high-speed broadband pilot project, which will offer residential customers and business users downlink speeds of up to 40Mbps.
The bad news for south africans is that 3 Years ago telkom also announced that 4mbps will be upgraded to 10mbps. This has still not been realised.

It's gonna be a desperately long wait for our new 20/40mbps lines.

I wonder why Telkom is not running that old advertising campaign about the operation that was done via ISDN some time ago. Shame they were so proud of being late for the party back then, I'm sure nothing much has changed in HQ and therefore SA falling back is inevitable. They still don't get that the world functions on results, not announcements of sweet nothings.

Even if everyone got a 40Mbps line it would still cost $1m because of Telkfail's ridiculous IPC costs.

Tell us something we dont know.. We hardly have proper 1mb sync connections..

Should get a boost with the 384/1024 upgrades though. The bazzillion 384k users must be dragging down the avg quite a bit.

Averages are so misleading!

There is now way that the average upload speed in SA is over 1Mbps. This would imply that most people either have HSDPA, Fibre or Bonded ADSL connections.
I would've believed an average of say 400kbps upload speed.

They should calculate the averages based on population size. Judging by those statistics, there are a fair amount of people in that sample using non-Telkom connections which (while total cost is cheaper than Telkom) is still pretty expensive and out of reach of most South Africans for any serious internet usage.

Let us have faith in Telkom. I'm sure they will do something about this.

I have lost faith in VodaCom, Im leaving them for Cell C after I claim my talking points for a data bundle, and when the bundle runs out.

Can those on 10meg lines stop doing speedtests every hour, so we can see what the real average is.

He he. Agreed. I don't think the 384's are big on speedtests.

More so if they are on capped.
