Broken molar - gum guard while I wait for the dentist?

I have a broken molar - Im not in pain but the ragged edge is shredding my tongue. Has anyone had to deal with something like this and would a gum guard help? I guess maybe not for when out and about but I would imagine it might help keep me sane and my tongue from being cut. Most of the tooth is gone so I just want something to cover that side of the mouth for now. Any advice on what to do before I get to see the dentist on Tuesday?

There are no edges - well very little - and they're at the gum line - I don't want to do damage. But yeah, I'm ready to file. Root canal done on that side so no pain.

The tooth that broke already had a root canal? Did you only have a filling instead of a crown on it after the root canal? What do you plan to do now? Have it extracted completely?

Yes - extracted - I'll probably do an implant or (second choice) bridge.

That worked for day 1 (yesterday) - I was en route to the opthamologist to have a cateract checked out after a retina detachment earlier this year. Getting old is a bugger LOL. It's just a bit soft to stay in shape unfortunately. Next is the hook and peg leg.

Depends how desperate you are but you could put some cotton wool against the tooth, it won't be fluffy after a few seconds.

Unfortunately the edge right at the gum is where the sharp bits are, not sure how well it would hold but it's worth a try - nothing to lose!

Use a nail file (Emery board) to file down roughness

Some pharmacies sell an emergency hiking/camping dental kit where you mix a powder and liquid to make a temporary filling which you pretty much just squash in there.

Wow... I'm blown away. He used the drill (no anasthetic required today since it's had a root canal), cleaned up any decay and rebuilt it. All done within 30 minutes. Considering there was hardly any tooth left (roots and base seem to be there), I'm amazed that he could do that. My mouth feels good too - going to tuck in to late brekkies lol.

Did he just glue the broken off tooth back on?
