Can one build a decent budget PC for around R3000 (or preferably less)?

This is EXCLUDING monitor, mouse, keyboard, and OS.

It wouldn't be used for gaming at all.

So it's the case, motherboard, processor, ram I think.

Some opinions/builds would be awesome. I just am not too clued up about what goes together and the best value for money.

Thanks!

EDIT: also the HDD and PSU

Is it to replace an existing setup? If so, then surely the chassis and quite probably the PSU can be recycled. So then, you just need:
(1) MoBo
(2) PSU
(3) RAM

And if the HD is not going to be recycled...
(4) HD

PM PostmanPot - he seems to be building a decent rep around here for this kind of thing - he could probably sort you out.

It's a new setup. Oh forgot about the HDD, will need one as well.

I'm looking at something for my mom, was originally going to get a laptop, but then thought I could probably get something nicer in desktop form.

EDIT: and the psu!

PC's are about 20%-30% more this time of year. In February shops like PC Zone normally drop prices. Most of these cheap PC's work out cheapest to buy direct from Esquire if you can sign-up for an account. An i3 system with 4gb of RAM will be around R3000.

Something like this should be fine:

Case: R299.00
Cooler Master CMP 102

PSU: R419.00
Corsair VS350

Motherboard: R544.00
ASRock H71M-DGS

CPU: R506.00
Intel Celeron G1620

RAM: R249.00
Transcend JM1333KLN-2G

Hard Drive: R650.00
Western Digital Caviar Blue WD5000AAKX

Optical Drive: R202.00
ASUS DRW-24D3ST

Total: R2869.00 + R90.00 (shipping) = R2959.00

For an added bonus, email nick@ngrcomputers.co.za and see if he can match the price for you, then you can get it from him, he's based in Durban North.

pc zone should have one for that price. For normal office work they are fine.
