Re: the Nikon vs Canon debate.

Thus far it seems that every Nikon that is suposed to compete against the equivalent Canon, came up short on features, and thus, value for money.

On a separate line, I see Makro is selling the end-of-line Canon 500D with 2 lenses (etc) at R6k.

Resolution < Actual performance.

Let me educate you:

To the OP, it really between this and this...

The Nikon's price might be higher, but it comes with loads more goodies and a better kit lens. No contest really.

Go and try them out. Take an SD card with you and do some comparison shots with the same settings. You can review them at home.

I sent this link to a colleague at work that spent R40,000.00 on his 1D MKIV .... told him that the Nikon 5100 has better colour depth, wider dynamic range and better IQ

He wasn't impressed - and that's when I started doubting the site ;)
It's good for a laugh even if it isn't factually correct. If you base your purchases only on their recommendations you pretty much deserve what you get. :)

Well, the figures are what they are. And sometimes crop bodies beat the high-end stuff. Consider this. Pay attention to the colour depth and dynamic range...

The thing to remember is that the higher-end bodies have longer product cycles. The lower end ones release every 6 months to a year, while, from the 5D/D700 up its more like every 3-4 years. So it's not unrealistic to expect the lower end bodies to leapfrog the "current" high-end ones in certain aspects of image quality.

I did see a D3000 kit at Game Greenstone for R4999 ... not to bad, not entirely sure what a Kit in this case constitutes.

I am stuck in the same predicament. From what I've read the Nikon does out do the Cannon but by only a bit and as said before both will take amazing photos if you know what you doing(the camera doesn't make the photographer). i think when i am ready to buy i am going to take a trip to Orms and go play with the 2 a little and see which one i prefer. My question is do you guys recommend any courses? there is pretty much everything you need to know on the net so some people I've spoken to say its a waste of money others say it can be valuable spending some time with a Skilled Photographer.
