well, it's official. Sentech have been given the preverbial finger by your's truly.

I've wasted enough money on this cr@p and I'm not prepared to give them another CENT!

I've ordered my 9Gig unshaped ADSL, and it'll (apparently) be installed the end of the month...

This doesn't mean that I'll dissapear from MyADSL, I'll just move to the ADSL section and peek in on you guys every now and again.

I know... It's Telkom... but better the devil you know...

Kai ...

I'm also in the Randpark Ridge area... I've been told on 2 occasions that those of us in this area will not be able to get ADSL as we're running fiber.... I hope they checked that out for you.

According to the number checking facility I CAN get ADSL but sadly ... the fiber makes this impossible ... until they get ADSL over fiber optic sorted out...

At the moment the HOMEdsl option is looking very attractive for me ... if you got confirmation that they'll get you working I'll have to find out as well ;-)

Hi Regardtv

The mini-DSLAM’s will sort out the problem of fiber optic & ADSL and Telkom is already installing them. Just make certain if you can not get it…

Last I heard (which was a while ago) ... they were not yet installing ... I'm glad to hear it's started happening ....

While I'm not a fan of paying crazy fees for a service, Telkom at least delivers the service indicated. Time to go jiggle the finances and change my suspension request into a cancellation request ... as soon as Telkom gets back to me ;-)

Arf's finance jiggling:

Current:
Sensucks MyWireloss 128 @R650 per month plus the mweb dial up that I haven't cancelled R150 = R800 per month.
On cancellation, I will try to get a credit for the modem that is being returned: 5 months * R170 per month = R850.

New option:
Buy the cheapest possible DSL modem: R380
Install ADSL Line: R400
Set-up expense Total: R780.00
(Arf's credit balance: R70)

Monthly charges: Telkom R450 for Home384 option.
MWeb ISP charge 3Gb: R329 (yes, its expensive, but I won't need to change my email address, and I do use their subscriber only content)
Monthly total: R729.00
(Arf's monthly saving: R71)

hmmm, I could save up my R71 every month to buy a good wireless DSL router, or maybe wait for iBurst, or the SNO,....or maybe just buy beer.

Have been watching all the dramas unfold over the past few months (ever since the wireless service was supposed to launch in Cape Town).

Was close to signing up, until I emailed support a while back about what speeds I can expect (seeing what compaints was posted here), and was told:
"This is a contended bandwidth and you could go as low as 4.2kbps and as high as 128kbps depending on the net traffic and which sites you are visiting."

Being offered "broadband" that was far slower than my mweb dial-up connection, just did not seem so attractive any more.

I hate giving telkom more of my money, but need 24h internet.
So when telkom anounced the new HomeADSL384 service I decided that I'd waited long enough for sentech to sort out it's mess, and earlier this week signed up for adsl (no contract).

Will use it until something better (iBurst?) comes along, but it's highly unlikely that I'll be giving sentech a chance.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but R450 + R329 = R779. Thus, Arf's monthly saving = R21

I've also ordered my HomeDSL384. Can't wait to shove the MASSIVE barbed dildo I've been making over the past few months up sentech's ass.

Guys I was frantic to get MyWireless but *thank the lord* I held off long enough to see the service crash and burn.

So do what I did a month ago ... get ADSL on monthly rental in the mean time.

ADSL:
Before cap:
Local:
<30 ms pings
Downloads: 55K
International:
300-400 ms pings
Downloads: 55K

If shaping is getting in the way of your p2p just set it to use port 80 ... problem solved.

After cap:
Local:
<30 ms pings
Downloads: 55K
International:
300-400 ms pings
Downloads: You can *just just* manage to browse int sites. But no downloads.

If you are a p2p fanatic like me just get two accounts. Use the capped one for local p2p (there is a BIG local p2p scene) and the other for int downloads. You get 6 GB of int downloads pm too.

This is a very good non-contract temporary solution until the ZA broadband scene has stabilised somewhat (June 2005?).

ADSL, as a technology, is bloody awesome ... its real broaband.

And who knows, due to competition Telkom may eventually offer split local and int bandwidth options i.e. unlimited local + throttled (but uncapped int).

I'm VERY happy with ADSL I can assure you, even with its current artificial limitations ... and it can only get better from here on.

Well add +- R5 to that and you could still get a 6 pack. Nowhere near enough to keep you happy though

I'd still rather stick to mywi, knowing that I can still download 10GB / m with the international speed I get, which is the equivalent at the end of the day 2 three ADSL accounts.

YES, its much slower, but I get more volume.

Fair enough ... I just hope things dont fall apart for MW as they try to ramp the user base up to 20k.

Basically if you sign with Sentech now you have to trust their performance for at least a year ... not something I'm prepared to do :)

dorris,

fair enough...I am a bit concerned about the cap....but then again I can VPN to my office and use that int bandwidth if I really need more d/ls after the cap...

Volume is not such an issue for me, but 24/7 and speed is. With the current MyWi situation, I may as well use a dial up for international.

At the end of the day, for both cases, we may be in ****, Telkom has never stated the free availability of local after the cap, up until now, its unfortunately an added bonus, I have heard talk at the start of this year that they considering cutting local at cap to prevent VPN's and the likes.
Of course, this will outrage all users, but after sentechs competition, I think TK are having a good laugh, and feel quite confident.

Sentech on the other hand have after initially saying no cap, now itroduced a soft cap, but whos to say they won't make it a definite cap, or lower it!

mass exodus from SA, at the turn of the broadband war!!!

im with dorris and vowthorn. in my case its still a better option (even with the international 48kbps capping and for p2p there is local stuff for the *capped* users)

YA know I could handle it if my cap was 96 and not 48. After getting used to the slow speed that would be quite cool.

IMO the only reason ADSL is "real broadband" is because Telkom gets the bandwidth for free. 3GB is so little compared to what they have available so realistically its not costing them big money. If Sentech had access to bandwidth then MyWi would also be real broadband as intended. But of course greed got in the way somewhere.

personally since ADSL is a Telkom shaped product I will never get it. Unless they remove the cap or make it 30GB then I will think about it.

vowthorn: why did you change the signature? it is still MyWireless 48!!

Cuz my speed improved after I complained to help desk :) But in reality its now a MyWirelss 64. But the euphoria of gettin 5-6K downloads decided to make me change it. Check the complains/compliments section for details.

outta of interests sake I only use SuprNova for torrents... what local ones are there?
