Three weeks ago, the water supply pipe to the home of an elderly couple, Lorna and Glen Benjamin of Extension 29, Bethelsdorp, Port Elizabeth, burst.

“We reported this problem the same day it occurred. Everytime we call [Nelson Mandela Bay Municipality] we are given reference numbers and a promise that the workers will come and fix it,” says Lorna.

“We received two reference numbers, one for our water meter and another one for the burst pipe. A municipal official came here three times and told us not to worry because this is municipal water that gets wasted, it won’t effect our water account.”

All too common. But try solve that with prepaid water meters anyway, good luck!

What a waste of such a precious resource

Have heard from many that burst pipes more often than not run for 30+ days in the townships before being attended.

I report burst / leaking pipes pronto when I them, I basically have COJ on speed dial.

I have seen them respond as fast as 1 hour, really impressed.

Dont try ro report a broken street light tho.

Nothing happens in 1 hour in KZN.

Remember a gusher of a burst pipe left that way for 8 days in Margate and that was when there was water cuts  They just don't give a flying fudge

Same in CoT, seems the DA has a real thing for leaking water pipes but feel f'all for street lights

I dont report **** anymore. Will never waste another second of my life trying to reason with idiot municipal officials. Let the fcking water go to waste.
