Buy a generator – electricity expert

Although it has 45 583MW at its disposal, the utility can apparently only access 24 000MW due to “planned and unplanned” maintenance.

Jeez! Approaching half of what these idiots say is the full capacity.

Are we still supplying flat out to neighbouring countries?

The fascinating thing... Power usage levels are 7% LOWER than in 2007 and Eskom still can't handle it!

In 2007 the grid was in perfect working order. Today it has had insufficient maintenance, all over.

Yes you are! I would just like to thank you for your sacrifice......

/Moose saunters over to his aircon, wondering unto himself how cold this thing would run if he placed it outside in his garden at full tilt?

I'll buy a generator with the change left over from purchasing the latest model Porsche... Pfft...

Always a pleasure. But you don't need it - you are getting your own private garden ornament generator, aren't you?

/Moose checks spelling of the head NAZI ....(damn wanted to type NAZI"""""""""""S)

Yes! I am, 25lt tank........

/Moose wonders what colour it might come in, does not want it to clash with the clour of his braai grid!

Thankfully we have had a 5kVa generator for a few years now.
We are able to supply 2 houses with basic electricity needs for as long as we need.
Petrol costs are just killing us, as we use a full tank of 20L in about 12 hours.

I don't get why they don't blackout the residential areas heavily during the week though? Most of the economically active population is at work then so you can shutdown all those geysers at the homes.

I'm thinking about going out and getting this today:
http://www.makro.co.za/diy/ellies-6kva-petrol-generator-electric-start-245629EA

Setting it up on the kitchen wall outside (right opposite to the DB board) and getting a changeover switch - naturally with a electrician to set it up. My concern is my neighbors though, my kitchen wall is about 2-3m from the very high boundry wall - which is right next to their pool area. Any idea how loud these things are?

My other option I was looking at was this:
http://www.makro.co.za/diy/ryobi-5-5kva-petrol-key-start-generator-159320EA

Looking at Makro as I get 40% off with my ebucks savings :)

We have one of them, and it is reasonably quiet. It is in the garage, with enough ventilation to not cause a problem. Moving about 5 metres away from the garage the noise hardly bothers anymore.
If I remember correctly it was rated at 75dB.
Bought it at Makro 2 or 3 years ago, and it cost R3299-00 at the time.
Now it is R7999-00. Supply and demand at its best.

Had to fire up my old 5.5kva when they hit me at 6pm.

Only the second time in 5 years I felt the need to use it.

Came back at 10 but at least got to watch some TV and prep supper.

These things are loud. Try and conceal it in an unused room or something and run extension cords.

Why can't I just fit my house with a crank handle?

When the power goes out and I have LED'S everywhere I just walk outside and give it a few turns and we have lights for an hour.

Hey, that would suck very badly for me.

....all South Africans can do now about the current electricity situation is to buy candles and a generator.
.... and former MD of the South African Independent Power Producers Association.
I can see why he is the 'former MD'. Why isn't he suggesting we install solar panels or other more sensible solutions? Candles and a generator might be OK for emergencies, but if you are truly predicting long term power shortage, then the solution is long term power production by individuals.
