@Arf9999: I know that's how they work, that's why I said it was my only dislike. I just love browsing through actual stock on the odd occasions I get to a real store. For convenience and selection online stores can't be beaten.

I love secondhand books shops, i love bookshops but the best are in PTA and i'm in JHB now. When i know what i want i love shopping online, and kalahari was so good until about six months ago, now i'll rather try CNA:D

I just love reading.... soul food:eek:

"secondhand books shops" where in jhb/pta is there good one's?

I'm in two minds. Online is great when you know exactly what you want i.e author/title. I have found, though, that you can't trust online reviews - especially user reviews.... and that makes me wary of buying books by authors that I haven't read before.

Thus, I prefer bricks and mortar, purely because I like to browse for books, and I can skim through the book to see if I enjoy the writing. This way I find books that I would never have found online.

edit: the other reason i like physical stores is because my id is overdeveloped... When I want something, I want it now... not in 10-15 days.

Me to i like the shop it self but if i know wha i want i go online. I do not like first person story telling much i prefer 3rd person and they do not tell you things like this on the website.

@Arf9999: I agree there. It is difficult to find something new online unless you know what you are looking for. On the other hand the astronomy books I tend to look for are only available online.

If you don't mind reading second hand books, try www.betterworld.com.

I've bought several second hand books from them on several occassions and I've always received my books.

Their search function is pathetic but their shipping isn't as exhorbitant as the other used book stores like abebooks, etc.

you pull out your cellphone, turn on mobireader... it fills your screen, and when you want to go to the next page, you just press down on your scroll button. You can also set it to auto-scroll at your desired speed.

The software on your computer loads the books onto your cellphone. it can convert from a number of formats.

You can find plenty of free books from places like Tor.com

You can also find thousands and hundreds of public domain books at places like gutenberg.org

I can get through several books a month, reading in line at the bank... etc.

I wouldn't mind an actual e-ink e-book reader like the iRex or Sony Reader, but they aren't available over here and importing makes them hellishly expensive. Would be nice if they could become mainstream devices just like cellphones.

Ja, I know what you mean. It's not intended to replace your books... just give you more books to read in more places. You are not likely to read a hard copy book in the line at the bank... but this way I can still read. Working through all of H.P. Lovecraft and Arthur Conan Doyle right now. :)

Try it... you might like it.

My books from Fascination have arrived in good order. It took 7 days through the normal post (cheapest option). Their prices seem very good so I'll recommend them - especially the specials. 5 books @ R130 is a sweet deal.

I have an idea. Get your ass up from behind the PC and go visit a mall. Most book stores now has a side coffee bar. Meaning, you can buy your book and start reading over a cup of coffee and chill a few hours.... outside.... with other people.... not on the internet....

@AcidRazor: Not all of us are lucky enough to be able to live near a mall or bookshop for that matter. The closest bookshop from me is around 200km away... quite a drive to pick up a new paperback! That's where online shops come to the rescue for those of us in the middle of nowhere.
