"A motor vehicle that has not been licensed for four years will be deregistered automatically."

So why is it that the place I got in contact with wants to charge me R5000 (R1000 per year) above their fee? They claim there is no such thing as automatic deregistration and the license fees will need to be covered before it can be deregistered.

Maybe the 4 years fees are still due if you re-register it.

That would be R4k then. But even then they were clueless and would have quoted me R10k if it was 10 years. It's unbelievable that someone who does it as a business can't tell me how it works.

Think I should just pop into the dept and see if it's still in the system or not.

None. But I have a car which has a new owner, but still on my name. Then I also have a Motorcycle.

Since the post office don't work properly, I went to renew my bike cos I have the disc. The guy at the counter typed in my ID number and picked up that the car has expired and haven't been paid for yet.

He didn't offer to allow me to pay for the bike only.

Maybe I could have pushed my luck to only pay for the bike, but I paid for both as I already was in line for an hour.

So I only have experience and nothing else to back it up.
That's them doing it, not the law. Same thing with you can still renew if you have an unpaid fine, it even says so at the bottom of the page they print out for you, but they'll still refuse (depending on who you get).

You can renew but the system will refuse to print out the license. If you pay for two it will print a blank invoice without the disc, one with the disc and then one paper with the disk for the first.
