Hi all,

I found few posts around this forum about the price of the MyWireless modems overseas, and it seems that they cost about R700-800 there.
I wonder if the modems they sell overseas are exactly the same as the ones they sell here for R3500. If this is the case, then why not organize some import or buy them online from UK for example. With the delivery and the duty I don't think the total cost will be not more than R1200-1500 which is less than a half of R3500.

Everyone knows that we have been ripped off in terms of monthly internet cost, and maybe Sentech and the others have some excuse for that, but I don't think there is an excuse for overpriced modems!!!

Lets not allow them to fool us!!!!

If someone can definitively say that a Woosh modem will work here (with proof to back their statement), then I'm going to get a m8 in NZ to send me one. As far as I can see they are the exact same modems, the question is whether or not access to the Sentech network is based on some IMEI or other unique identifier of the modems. Also I wonder if the modems are flashed with service provider specific data. theRodent, ProASM, care to enlighten us?

If none of the above restrictions occur, then I'll be taking orders for Woosh modems soon [;)]

Are you shure those modems can be bought without a contract in that country ?

They might be subsadised like our cell phones

Dont forget there will be 14% Vat as well as import duties when they come in as well as clearence fees
and dont forget shipping

Wireless2, that is exactly how Woosh have done it!
Their subsidy scheme has been all over the web for ages.
(But here in SA Fastcomm is still making a +/-40% markup)

I don't know about the subsidy story, if this is the case maybe the modems really worth R3500. But I would not worry about the 14% VAT, the import duty and the shipping cost. The import duty on such things is about 5% as far as I know. VAT + duty = 19%. If you can buy it for R800 you will pay ~R160 on top, therefore will be R960 + shipping cost. Still a way under R3500.

I would definatley be interested in buying a modem from overseas, especially if it saves quite a bit of money if anyone can organise please let me know :)
