Hi Guys

I'm in need of about 5 old laptop batteries. They can be in any condition - broken etc. They are for a project I'm testing/doing. :)

I'm willing to pay the shipping cost via unregistered post office econoparcel for the battery (R30) + R20 for the actual battery - so R50 per battery. If anyone can help me out with 1 or more that would be awesome.

I will pay via EFT on a trust basis - will PM my address and instructions on how to ship on request.

I'm going to dig in to the e-waste bins etc to try and find some , but will buy from you if you PM.

The battery pack I'm building will include a balancing circuit board to prevent this type of over-voltage situation.

However , that was sufficiently scary. I think a fire resistant battery box is in order.... :p

Magnesium boxes are awesum!!! :p

The problem is balancing charging and over voltage protection wont help. You are using old pressurized Li-ion batteries. They self detonate due to age and expended life cycles. The Chinese Li-ion batteries you are scouring only have a guaranteed 500 cycle life approx.
That is 18 months at daily cycle count. 2 years is pushing it. Mine is 4 years going on 5 and I am receiving threats over the fire-starters as I have 2970 of them currently charging and discharging on an almost daily basis.

You have 2970 batteries you use everyday?

I have researched this... however I cannot find evidence to suggest that they combust or burn due to age or being charged when old. If you can point me to some I would be grateful.

I also won't be using "very old" cells (probably 6-7 years or older won't be used) - I will test each cells individual maximum charge voltage to determine their age and grade them together. Any cells which are obviously well passed 3-400 cycles will be discarded. I also won't be cycling them more than about 1/6 per day.

I've found some containers that will retain the blast of a small lithium battery (big enough for my purposes) , and the fire aspect I will deal with by using something like this :

http://www.protekasia.com/en/products/fire-protection/re-flame/

I'll then see if I can grossly overcharge a pack and blow it up in a controlled environment to see what the blast would be like and if my fire protection mechanisms worked. This will be one use for the really old batteries I collect.

If you have any other advice on this would be interested to hear.

Have had a couple overheat and spontaneously combust. This is from personal experience. No balance charging. Only over voltage and overheating protection. The problem does manifest if you try and charge up a flat Li battery. These are very sensitive batteries with high energy capacity vs volume and weight.

Just keep them away from any valuable entity, to be safe...Good luck.
