Cabana Pub and Restaurant accused of racism

A Rietfontein restaurant has been accused of racism after staff allegedly refused to serve two black customers on Monday afternoon.

This all seems very strange. I really want to know the whole story behind this incident because surely, in this day and age, a manager isn't stupid enough to turn someone away because of their race. Or do they still exist?

Is it just me or do IOL focus on race related news? Most of the stories where whites are being accused of racism is coming from IOL! I must say that I don't really refer to IOL for news because of this.

Back on topic. I think that there are more to this story than being said in this artickle. It was written very bias towards the two black persons. There are reasons people are being told they are not welcome in a restuarant. I think there will be a valid reason in this case aswell. I am sorry, but if you are a restaurant owner and want to take a stance like this, then you don't have to go through the effort to open the place as it will be closed within days...

There must be more to this story because I can't believe that anybody can be so stupid. How in this day and age can a restaurant still not serve all races? If this is the case, close the place and take action against the owner.

I always think there is a bit of merit to the story if NONE of the employees of the establishment want to be named. :rollyeyes:

But hey, it's their resturaunt, "right of admission reserved" and that crap. But that won't stop people from complaining and them getting a fine. But if they can afford the fine, they will continue with the practice.

The article says "Cabana" . I think it's a little place near the Jakaranda center. Not sure though... But I don't think it's cubana, as far as I know there isn't a cubana in rietfontein.

Recently I was at a very upscale restaurant, the evening cost over R2000 which is a boatload of money for me. Three well dressed black men came in (Levi and Polo clothing) instead of the black pants collar tie affair but still decent. They arrived at their table and promptly let all hell reign lose on the black waitress (they arrived without a booking, didn't want to wait in the foyer and then got upset when their table wasn't cleared).

Now I would have made them wait in the foyer and cleared the table first but things don't always work out perfectly.

Then they became very very loud and I must admit, they lacked table manners for such a refined restaurant which nobody addressed. I left before I planned to leave.

The owners however saw the problem but did not do anything. In other words, here is the example of black people being discriminated against by not being treated equal to others (whites would have been asked to leave). Had they been asked to leave outsiders would have thought it racist also.

My 2 cents.

This has nothing to do with the Cubana chain. Please learn to read before dragging a company's name through the mud.

On Topic: this is really pathetic on the restaurant's part. Close them down! Sounds to me like there isn't really much more to this story. I know that there are racist kunts like this alive and well in SA still. Sounds like this has been an ongoing issue only now being brought to the fore. If this is merely a case of racism, then kudos to the black couple for standing up against these embarrassments...

1 - I didn't ask for an apology.
2 - I didn't print the article.
3 - I used the word "IF" - are you going to say that you doubt that this is the case too? We see blatant racism from predominantly black organisations on a daily basis and don't question it at all, in fact we lambaste it. As soon as a case of blatant racism against a white is made, many seem to jump on the apologetic bandwagon - "there must be more to this story". Please! We all know of racists like this I am sure - the fact that one possibly owns a restaurant in Vryheid does not surprise me in the least little bit.

Well like I said, if there is no more to this story (which sounds like it based on the car guard's stories), then it is blatant racism and pathetic to the n'th degree. If there is more to it and they were somehow justified in their actions, well then they should take it up with the editor of IOL. I'm commenting on the news, not assumption...

What brought you to this conclusion? You've made a leap-frog judgement here. It was a couple sitting down to have dinner. The fact that they're black makes them thief suspects?

I think it's obvious that this thread is full of white on black racist apologetics. As a non-racist white South African, I find that pretty deplorable. I can understand why some people WANT there to be more to this story - but sometimes that just isn't the case. And I don't read much more into this story...
