Big change coming to TV Licences in South Africa

Cabinet has approved the submission of the South African Broadcasting Corporation (SABC) Bill of 2023 to parliament, which proposes changes to the broadcaster's TV Licence scheme.

While it is unclear what the new bill contains as it isn't yet available to the public, previous proposals suggested scrapping the SABC TV Licence.

please comrats. get the gravy flowing again. the ANC politicians need it while they clutch their Louis Vuitton and sip on some fancy Dom Perignon & Sprite.

The problem with most not paying their licences is that we might now be in for another compulsory tax.
Like i've said before, i hope the ones who were so vocal about not paying their TV license will tell their employer or business to stop paying SARS when its bundled in there... :)

Good,
The only way this ends is with us getting to the point where we withhold all income tax because there's no other choice.

So you're just going to keep paying for whatever pointless sh*t they come up with because you think they're going to tax you anyway?
That's no way to win at life.

It proposed that the levy should be technology-neutral and based on a household’s ability to access SABC services.

This means households will be charged the TV Licence tax even if they don’t watch the SABC’s content or own a TV.

How do you access SABC services without a TV?

You still have to pay even if you don’t access it. Same as public schools, hospitals, and security.

I am all for this. Let the taxpayer carry the failed organization. It is the right thing to do.

What's still not clear is exactly WHO is going to collect this tax. The only government entities in South Africa who levy taxes on a household level are the municipalities. SARS collects taxes from individuals and juristic entities like companies and trusts, not households, so it's hard to see how SARS would have the capability to do this.

You can access it on your phone.

Not on mine.
