Cabinet is concerned about the recent spike in rape and the brutalisation of women and children, acting government spokeswoman Phumla Williams said on Thursday.

The executive had urged South Africans from all walks of life, young and old, to support the government's work in turning the tide on gender-based violence, she told journalists following Cabinet's regular Wednesday meeting.

"As a nation, each South African has a duty to come forward and report these heinous crimes so that perpetrators may be brought to book."

The criminal justice system, on its own, would not be able to eliminate the problem, she said.
