Calcium Alternative ?

calcium sandoz, menacal 7, caltrate plus - all good. For an adult male, supplementation not essential unless you are small frame or family history of osteoporosis. Female - supplementation is mandatory from early 20's at least. Exposure to sunlight is essential for Vitamin D production by the body and subsequent absorption of calcium. Fortunately in SA we have an abundance of sunlight so no extra vit D supplementation required. However if you are are a couch potato or shift worker, extra vit D supplementation might be needed.Careful if you have a propensity for kidney stones or on certain heart medication. Check with your health practitioner before beginning any supplement.

@prophet - your'e right. no substitute for a good diet over popping pills.

Well i eat a tin everyday and i don't notice it, what does the added mercury do? Is it worse than the air we breathe everyday?
Interesting, seems like a rather bigger issue with tuna . so many symptoms i think i need a mercury test now haha just to be sure.

I wonder whether one would be exposed to more mercury from regularly eating canned tuna or from amalgam dental fillings. Fish bones are a good source of calcium though.

First glass of soya was odd, next was less odd and now it's ok to drink. Not sure if the soya protein is that healthy to two non-asian folks...

Got myself the RiceMilk, see how that pans out :D

Apart form drinking cow milk which gives me sinus what other things can I take that's a decent form of calcium supplement ?

Summer I normally drink goats milk which doesn't bother me as cows milk would, it's just winter there is now more goats milk....

Guiness(sp?) is good for you !

Most calcium suppliments have too much dolamite (not sure of the spelling) but it apparently causes other problems.
The BEST way to comsume soluble calcium is to dissolve egg shells in something acetic, like orage juice, lemon juice or even better, Kombucha! Collect egg shells in freezer and then when you have enough, rinse in boiling water and crush and then let them stand in Kombucha for two or three days and drink. Fabulous.
ANother way is to get your own Kefir milk culture and make your own yoghurt, especially if you can use soya milk, it makes K2 vitamins, which cost twelve arms and three legs if you had to buy the tablets from a health shop. THe oriental women do not have osteoporosis because the drink Nato (soya yoghurt)
Anyone want to buy some bottled Kombucha? I will check in again on Monday.

Indigestion tablets like Tums are useful since they contain lots of calcium.

Almonds, broccoli, spinach and other green veggies should be sufficient then, I think. But if you don't mind soy milk then go nuts. I love soy milk, I have my cereal with it, mix Nesquik/Milo in it when the mood strikes me. But mostly quite happy to have it as is :D

+1

Common ppl... only one person came up with this answer? Green veggies... and lots of them:P Much better than supplements. Soy Milk is a great alternative to cows milk too. Been using soy milk over cow's milk for a while now.

Oily fish like salmon, beans, nuts and seed mix packs, broccoli, tofu, oranges - they all contain a lot of calcium and the body can absorb it. That last part is important because things like spinach contain plenty of calcium but also contain oxalate which makes it very difficult for the body to absorb the calcium, so most of it goes straight through you...
