Hi
I've setup a solution with IR sensors in a work environment, so under each desk there is an IR sensor which senses when a desk is occupied, and we use the data to create some reports, trying to figure out how different rooms / spaces are utilised.

So I was wondering if this could be done with a camera / webcam instead, if you could compare pictures taken every few minutes, and from this analyse how many people are in the room, and get the data to a DB for analysis. etc..

Having no luck with google today, so wondering if anyone has seen something like this?

many thanks

Remember you must inform the people they are on camera and good luck with that.

What is wrong with the particular IR implementation?

The IR is fine , just requires many devices & power points. And when monitoring hundreds of buildings this becomes an issue, so just looking for something that can scale easier / cheaper

Did you custom develop the current IR setup ? or is it a product from a a vendor ?

How much do you pay per desk ?

This can easily be done using Arduino with Ethernet/Wifi or even via wirless/bluetooth that's sends to central controller.
Arduino UNO Compatible = R200
IR Sensor probably around R70 and Wirless transciever R35 to R150. Can be powered by USB or external power.

Not sure if the above makes it more or less expensive.
