I know someone posted it a while back but cant find it or maybe have not looked hard enough.

Please could someone assist?

Thanks
You put in all your details in your router and it tells you distance to exchange

marine1, if you want a more accurate figure call telkom (adsl support) and ask them for a LTS test and ask them for the distance.

Actual rates can vary significantly from these figures (usually by around 10% either way) that is pretty accurate.

So now my very, very uninformed question: are we running adsl or adsl2 locally?

Log into your router and get the line attenuation in dB from the status page. Enter that value into the online calculator. The result will be an estimate of your maximum sync speed and estimated distance from the exchange.

I can see my exchange from my Flat.... and this online tool is correct for me. Saying its about 1.7 km which is correct.@

@Wyrd: I believe we are running ADSL2

From what I understand is that your router will only report a maximum line attenuation of 63.5db, although it could be higher.

I put that in and it gave me a distance of about 4.5km and my highest attainable rate is 1880kbps, which is what is reported on my router.

I believe if your exchange has been upgraded to support the newer ADSL speed, then it is running ADSL2 or ADSL2+. If it has not been upgrade, then just ADSL.

There’s no need for a special calculator. One can deduce the length of your copper wire directly from your router’s attenuation. I compiled this graph.

Attenuation is the reduction in signal strength on your telephone line. The experts say attenuation is normally directly proportional to the length of your line.

1,0 km = 13,8 dB
1,5 km = 20,7 dB
2,0 km = 27,6 dB
2,5 km = 34,5 dB
3,0 km = 41,4 dB
3,5 km = 48,3 dB
4,0 km = 56,0 dB
4,5 km = 62,1 dB
5,0 km = 69,0 dB
> 5,0 km (sorry mate)

My router says my attenuation is 11 dB. According to this table I’m 800 metres from the exchange. That’s very likely. I have a 4 mbps ADSL line, my actual speed is 3,4 mbps.
